Default my 2 year old will nt wear jeans/pants or long sleeves

Hi, i am new to the board and I am a mother of a 2.5 year old. The weather is starting to get cooler and I have tried everything that i can think of to get my daughter to wear long sleeved shirts and pants or jeans. She acts like they hurt her when i put them on her and cries and hits me until i take them off. What advice does anyone have for me....P.S. She has a language delay and really only started talking in the last few months so i find it difficult because she does not comminicate well with me...help

kids that age really just don't like to get dressed...sounds like she is a little more extreme than most but if you don't mind me asking what would happen if you left the clothes on her and simply walked away from her fit?

I left the clothes on her for 10 minutes and it was a pretty bad tantrum. She started slapping her own face and falling on the floor. it was pretty dramatic. So I just took the clothes off her and we opted not to go out tonight. She was going to go to the fair and ride a pony...but she didn't want to hear anything from me.

Have her evaluated for Sensory Integration Disorder and Autism.

Both the speech delay and the resistance to clothing are huge red flags.

The earlier you catch these things, the more you're able to do for your child.

funny you should mention that....I have had her speech and hearing evaluated at 18 months and the hearing was fine and the speech was diagnosed with expressive language disorder and we did speech theropy. But, she just started a preschool program a month and a half ago and she really likes it but the teacher called me last night and told me some things she has observed. one thing was that she said my daughter always talks in the 3rd person the other thing she mentioned is that she does not really interact with any other kids she mimicks them but doesn't really know how to play with them. i was going to call my pediatrition tomorrow to ask her what she thinks. my daughter has a lot issues does not like stamps on her hands

My daughter didn't talk by 2.5 either - she had a variety of her own made up words for things, and just didn't mimic our language. We got her into speech therapy then and she has really blossomed.

Like your daughter, there were no hearing or physical impairments.

Last year we had her evaluated by a neuropsychologist for her rages - and we learned that she has ADHD combined type. As a result, I've been spending a lot of time on a board called conductdisorders.com. (which sounds scary, but is a support board for parents of kids with a whole range of challenges)

As a result, I've learned an awful lot about different neurological disorders - and recognized the symptoms you mentioned. It may be a false lead, but one I really think is important to follow through on. Shes so young, and if she does have SI or anything else related, catching it this soon will really be a boon for both you and her!

I posted this in another thread once, but it applies to this one.

My son whined about wearing a jacket a few times, and I acted totally laid back and let him go without one. After a few minutes in the cold, he was VERY vocal about wishing for his jacket. lol. I was like "nope...we're not going back. You didn't want one...so you can deal with it."

That was pretty much a one time lesson.

Weather won't kill em...just let them be. They won't die in the rain, or freeze to death.

They need to learn that you know best, because you're the parent.

Fooser, I did a similar thing with my daughter - she went through a phase last year where she refused to wear socks. Instead of fighting with her about it, I just told her the only kind of shoes that we don't wear socks with are flip flops, so if she wasn't going to wear socks that was fine, but she would have to wear flip flops, and her feet would be cold (It was around November - cold, but no snow). Wouldn't you know that the next day, she put socks and tennis shoes on without one word about it?

This is so true for an average, normal child. Children with sensory issues can care less (of course we don't know for sure that is what this child has or not) but, if it is a sensory thing, she won't wear long sleeves or jackets at all, even if its 30 below, she won't care. they just don't feel the same way a "normal" child feels
