Arrow Need Help with Infant/Toddler class project

Hi everyone!

I am currently going to school for a degree in Early Childhood education. I am working on a project for which I have to make a brochure for safety items (to childproof a home). I would like to get some input on products that you highly recommend, as well as those that were a complete waste of money.

So far I have been told that the outlet covers that you need to squeeze the sides to open are a must-have, as well as the baby gates that anchor into the wall. I was also told that cabinet locks are easy for a toddler to figure out, so you are better off just putting dangerous items up high.

Agree? Disagree?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for items for all rooms in the house, particularly the bathroom and kitchen.

Thanks!

Pam

I'm not so sure that cabinet locks are easy for a toddler to get off...I have a hard time getting them off! Items I would include would also be: disinfecting wipes, nightlights in each room, corner pads (for tables with corners).

Welcome!

Our cabinet locks work well. They aren't locks per se though. They are hooks that are on the inside of the cabinet and you can open them about an inch, just enough to stick a finger in and push down so it doesn't stick on the hook (hope that makes sense). My 3 year old has yet to figure it out. It also turned out to be Grandma proof. When we put them on, she came over to baby sit the next day and we forgot to tell her about them, she couldn't open any of the drawers while we were out.

Gates are good up to a point. Ours anchor to the wall and worked until about 6 months ago. My son didn't learn how to open them properly, but he did learn that brute force would.

Another thing to have is door handle covers. My son is an expert at opening doors he shouldn't, so these are a god send to protect him.

Thanks for the replies so far! Is there anything that anyone has bought that has turned out to be a complete waste of money?

Keep the info coming!

The only thing that I would not live without is a baby sling. Other then that, nothing off the top of my head. Now things that are nice... well boppy pillows were wonderful!!!!
The cabinet locks, my 2 year old can open as well, but I don't use them at home, she learned at church.

waste of money: pacifiers, stroller (my child hated them from the beginning)
