Default pre-LATCH Subaru Outback carseat installation

We have a 1998 Subaru Outback Legacy not equipped with LATCH, and it has proved near impossible to securely install it. Several times we have thought that we finally got it right, and then when my husband takes a hard right turn, the seat will tilt. One website said we should twist the seatbelt to tighten it, but that still doesn't seem to make it stable. Has anyone else run into this, and how have you solved it? Oh, by the way, we have a Cosco convertible carseat in the rear facing position, if that makes any difference...

I can't think of any good way around this without having the LATCH system. Is there anything in the car that you can secure the top of the carseat to so it will stop swaying?

Have an inspector teach you how to do it.

Former CPS Tech here... To echo Sirk, find a Car Seat Inspection station in your area and have a Child Passenger Safety Technician help you. He/she may be able to get it installed correctly or may tell you your car seat is incompatible with your car. It does happen sometimes.

Are you using a locking clip?

Thanks to all for the replies. I have checked out a couple of websites that list places where I can make an appointment with certified inspectors, so we plan to do that. My husband has also picked up an attachment that allows non-shoulder center lapbelts to be used to install the seat, so hopefully that will work...

Such attachments are not recommended. In fact, when you go for a car seat inspection, it will be removed. They are considered "Afermarket products".
CPSafety - Your online child passenger safety resource

I assume you have the car seat in the center rear with a lap belt only. A lap only belt should be fine by itself to install a car seat. If not, then you need to try an outboard position. Many times the center position doesn't work due to a hump in the seat or long buckle stalks, etc.. The next step is to try an outboard position by the windows.

Definitely seek help from a CPS Tech. You'll be glad you did.
