Default Stutter?

I realize my son is young and still learning to express himself; however, I've notice that he has a stutter. It can sometimes take him a minute to get 1 short sentence out. He'll trip over every other word. He'll repeat the same word over and over before moving onto the next one. At 2.5, he has an amazing vocabulary. He is so smart and seems to have no other speech issues. I'm just wondering if this is pretty normal or if it's something I should keep an eye on. Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

I don't know if it's normal, but I know my son still has difficulties with some words. He's almost 3. He just can't seem to say the letter "S". For example he says "wim" instead of "swim" and "lide" instead of "slide".

At this point I'm not worried. I think if he were about to go into school and still having trouble, then I would.

when my daughter gets really excited this happens. Sometimes she'll repeat the same word 5-8 times before she moves on. Normally she speaks very clearly though...does he always speak this way or is it just once in a while?

It is very normal, sometimes there brains take a little longer to form the sentence, even though they have great vocab there are times where they have a lot they are trying to say and placement of the words get difficult. I wouldn't worry about it, they usually outgrow it by 4-5 years old.

Thank you for all of your replies. No, he doesn't do it all the time. It's like 50% of the time. I'm not going to worry about it too much now. If he continues to do this when he's around school age, then I will look more into it.

Default Re: Stutter?

I have a cousin who was a major stutterer when she was young, my Aunt and Uncle sent her to a specialist for many years. Her issue was that her brain is actually a sentence or phrase ahead of her mouth.

When we were together, and she would begin to stutter, her mom and dad would calmly tell her "Slow down, take a breath, and think about what you want to say" (it became an automatic response) she would do as they said and would be able to fluently speak. this went on for a few years, and now as an adult rarely stutters.

This was what the specialist told them to do about it, and it has obviously worked, although it took several years... Hope this can help a bit.

I recommend you talking with (not to him) him more. Let him talk a alot, ask him many things, ask him to tell you a story about something, etc.
Kylie is the same age now (2 years 4 months) and she has a huge vocabulary. She has 2 older siblings (James and Shannie) who talk with her a lot and she speaks like James spoke when he was 4. I am surprised but also very glad about that.

Alot of times this happens with young children because their brains move alot faster than their mouths do.
