Children: 4yo girl 1yo boy | 5yo Mentality | | What are your thoughts?
Is a 5yo capable of understanding the difference between step mom and mom, married and boyfriend/girlfriend?

Children: 4 Year Old Daughter | Re: 5yo Mentality | | My four year old seems to understand pretty well. As evilbrent said.. "Your daddy loves you and GoodWolf loves you too."
She was a flower girl in GW and my wedding and I basically explained that a wedding is a ceremony or party where GW and I are going to stand up and tell our friends and family how much we love each other and that we want to live together as a family for a very very long time.

Children: 4yo girl 1yo boy | Re: 5yo Mentality | | Yep those are the basics we have covered. So I feel like most people think a 5yo can grasp the basic idea of mom/stepmom that they are different but the important part is they both love you. Married is different from BF/GF because there are not rings, a wedding, or a last name change. I feel like she completely understands these things but sometimes other people plant that seed of doubt.... Parenting seems chalk full of that.

Children: Three girls | Re: 5yo Mentality | | Yes, I'd say so for most 5 year olds. My daughter understands that her uncle and aunt are step parents to her cousins. What she doesn't understand are more complex issues like "why" some moms & dads divorce. She feels that if you are in love, then you stay in love with someone (oh, if only life was this simple!) I'd expect that's normal for most kids this age. |
