My daughter (nearly 5yrs) has already developed a weird thing about wanting to wear deodorant because we are very active so I use it quite a bit. Because I think general cleanliness is so important I bought her an organic crystal deodorant for sensitive skin and if it crosses her mind to use it (which happens a few times a month) then I let her.

I recall being in grade school (about 8-10 yrs old I think) and there being some odorous individuals and it was very embarrassing for them. They would often shy away from interactions in gym class and were generally very antisocial. Enforcing the use of deodorant early on would most likely have saved them from a lot of agony.

I think it depend on person to person. You can generalize everyone. For some it make happen very early, few will use deodorants at 12 years. I think I started using it a young age, though I don't have a strong BO.

I like people who use deodorants. People who don't use it usually use it really makes a bad impression with all that body odor.

I think it's best to ask your children using a body deodorant at a young age, my eldest son will be 8 years old next month

I will ask him using it asap, but he is already fond of perfumes and fragrances. I am sure he will start using it soon.

The other night I asked DS if he used the deoderant after a shower (just me and him talking) He says "Yeah you know I have a system now". Of course I asked him what it was. "I put it on before I get into the shower and after I get out"

Its so hard not to laugh sometimes.

LOL!!!

Once a young nephew came to visit for a couple weeks. I noticed that he showered daily, but always smelled rather tart underneath his Axe spray. Found out that it was his laundry. He was used to wearing the same clothes repeatedly without laundering them. Glad to say we sent him home after his visit with some new skills.

Forgot to add that our youngest DD began *needing* deodorant at age 8--I'm talking strong onion smell from her pits after playing. I thought it was strange, but the pediatrician assured me that it wasn't. I didn't need it until I was about 12, myself.
