Default No to Halloween??

My son, 5, refuses to dress up for Halloween. Should I force the idea or let him make his own decision here? Who doesn't like to dress up? He has a brother and sister that picked out new costumes yesterday...but he just wouldn't do it!

Me personally, I would tell him he doesn't have to but he still has to go trick or treating. BUT he has to wit with you while the others get candy. You have to have a costume to get the candy.

Now with that said, does he say why he doesn't want to wear one?

I wont give candy to kids who arent dressed up. As a result, that would be my reaction - that it is absolutely ok not to put on a costume, but that means he stays home and gets to hand out candy to other kids.

This might be totally ok with him - and his siblings might be willing to share their haul when they get home.

He says he's afraid of kids dressed in scary costumes...which makes me a little more sympathetic to his strong refusal.

What if you gave him a glow stick, that acted as a magic protection amulet? You could even take it further and dress him up as a magician, to help "amplify" his powers against the scary costumes!

Does he respond well to those kinds of methods?

That's not a bad idea! I will have to talk with him more. Once he makes his mind up about something....let's just say he is VERY strong willed as they say....(nicer way to say STUBBORN!)

If he is scared, it is hard to force him. Iagree passing out candy at home is a good way to do it. Also take him to the halloween store and see if he can pick out a costume himslef

I agree with them, don't force him but if he doesn't dress up he won't get candy

I wouldn't push it. On the same line, both of my kids were always scared of Santa in the mall. I never made them go up to see them. Not a big deal.

Yeah...good point. My kids still don't like to see Santa at the mall and we haven't pushed that one either.
Maybe I'll let my son walk with us while we trick or treat and I'll have a costume on stand by in case he changes his mind.
