I've got three children, and I wasn't wiping any of them at age 7....that doesn't sound "normal" to me.

My daughter is four and has been wiping herself since she was three. I have another daughter that is currently potty-training and periodically needs help (she is not quite three yet). What we do for her is to have her use wet wipes to wipe herself after going "number 2" (the same ones that we used when we changed her diaper). This works great and helps her do a more thourough job.

My DD is 7 and wipes her own butt, has done since she was 3ish. I think my cousin got his Mum to wipe his butt for a long time, but he was lazy and she spoilt him way too much, so it could be that maybe. Either way, its not really normal

I think that by 7 a child should be wiping himself, however, I have to admit I was one of the Mom's that let this go on too long. Part of if was just giving in to my son's begging, and part of it was that he didn't always do a good job himself.

Finally, my husband stepped in and put a stop to it. He took on the job of giving my son detailed instructions on how to wipe, and eventually my son stopped asking for Mom to wipe.

My daughter is 11 and i have to wipe her bottom. I think it is because she has a musle problem as she is still unable to tie shoe lases and do buttons. It is a real pain but i dont know how long it will be before she can do it all herself so i say you lucky lot.

While it sounds odd, my question is whether it is a function of the child being unable or unwilling to do it, or a parent(s) who got into the habit and won't let go (usually with the justification that little Joey doesn't do a good enough job, which then causes rashes, which is a lot more work, so therefore it's easier for the parent to do it).

I've got a 7 year old who would have others breathe for him if he could swing it, so it wouldn't be a major surprise to me if someone of that tempermant managed to get out of wiping duty.

If you are concerned, would you consider asking the parents? Or the boy?

I would say at 7 he should really know how to do that himself.

Yeah... that's pretty ridiculous, any kid not wiping at that age, unless they were sick of there was some particular reason they needed help for one or two certain occasions and they were comfortable enough to ask their parents. However, I don't think it's BAD, I just think it's stupid and unecessary. Like if I saw it, I probably wouldn't say anything, I would just think to myself "Oooookay, that's weird. They're wiping their seven year old's butt. Whatever." then I would probably go home and tell my boyfriend so we could say together how it was weird. There's no point to telling you that except that maybe that kid's parents should think about this.

Angela - You should really have her doctor check it out and see what the real problem is, and if there's something that needs corrected, because if I were 11 and my mom was wiping my butt I would be extremely embarassed.
