Default Research in to Children and TV

1. How often do your children watch TV?

2. What are your feelings on Childrens TV?

Wow! For me there are two really different answers to that question. My kids probably at times watch more TV than they should. I don't mind the younger one watching the shows on Nick JR like Dora or Blue's Clues b/c I know he's gaining something from it. I cannot stand the Disney shows that our preteen watches. I think the characters are way too precocious and "preciously" rude! It's a terrible example for kids.

My sons watched Sesame Street and things like that back when they were little..in the late 70's. I thought that was fine and tv never really became a central feature of their life. Their being twins meant they always had a playmate ans so they were very busy interacting with each other.

My daughter watches tv a lot and not a lot at the same time. Its on almost all day, but its more a background thing more then anything. She does absolutley love ELMO!!! So technically Sesame Street.
We only watch PBS. So it is a learning thing as well. Now PBS does have teletubbies which I won't let her watch. I think a show should teach something whether that be emotional growth, social growth or actual education.

My youngest watches PBS in the morning for about two hours and my oldest usually reads or something. After that it is outside or they play with their games and toys. Now in the wintertime I will admit they watch more TV but it isn't a constant all day thing.

Thank all for your comments. In reply to the last comment you say your "oldest usually reads or something", in your opinion do you prefer your children, watching TV or reading a book? also what type of, or specific books do they read? This question also applies to other parents.

Many Thanks

Of course I would rather have my child read, but she is 18 months old and doesn't read much yet, lol. She does love to sit on my lap and let me read. SHe will read for an hour just flippin gthrough the books (she turns the pages I read) then gets down, gets a new book, then climbs back into my lap. I hope she never looses that love for reading
