| Re: Anyone for teen boarding schools? | | I would suggest having your parents remove him from this school. I have heard many negative things about these schools for troubled kids. There is a website (I cant remember the name) where alumni post and most of them sound extremely bitter and messed up because of the experience. I discovered this when I began to look at one of those wilderness style summer camps for my niece. Like the troubled teen boarding schools there are some fairly shocking stories. I thought it would be a safe place to work through her grief. I now would not dream of it in a million years. Perhaps there are some good places but I would not take the risk.
Read a book called Help at any Cost. It shows how these schools began and what some of the effects and treatments can consist of.

Children: One boy, Bradley | Re: Anyone for teen boarding schools? | | I went to an extremely upscale boarding school up north…and my brother went to Andover. There are a lot of pros and cons: Cons: Tuition is more than colleges REALLY secluded from the real world and snobbish Racist If the student is not ready, there is no one to push him/her Pros: Great teachers Great facilities Great family atmosphere Light years ahead of public schools in terms of what a kid can get out of it if they apply themselves If the student is ready and commited, they will get a huge head of start in life |

Children: One boy, Bradley | Re: Anyone for teen boarding schools? | | It would depend on where he was at in life. If he was a C student, probably not. No sense going into debt for a kid who is not going to motivate himself. If he is a good student - absolutely. I've even told my wife that I want to send him to a private school early on. Not boarding, just a private one. Public schools nowadays seem like they really cheat the kids. Like...there's not a daily gym, or art class. Art, gym, music all alternate days to save money. If we have the money, yes, I will most definitely consider it. I don't think I benefited much from it. My brother, who always made straight A's, definitely has. He's making 90k a year now...and he's only 30. |

| Re: Anyone for teen boarding schools? | | Just to clarify foozer I am not referring to regular boarding schools. Just the ones catering specifically for troubled teens and the wilderness summer camps for the same population.
I came across a site called fornits. google it. I did not post only read. But this was where I read a lot of very angry posts from the kids who had gone through this system. I then found a series of other sites that highlighted some of the more extraordinary things that can go on. One thing that did not sit well with me at all is that many such boarding schools supervise phone calls home. It also does not seem uncommon to reserve the right to censor mail to family and friends or to inspect care packages for items the school disapproves of. When the kid complains the parents can be told to disregard the complaint as the kid is being manipulative and trying to get sent home. This may or may not be true but to my mind such a practice and culture of defensiveness and censorship is indicative of a deeper issue.
The book I ended up reading can be found on amazon. Amazon.com: Help at Any Cost: Books: Maia... |
