I am all for religious freedom among consenting adults, but have a lot of difficulty with it when it comes to young girls being married off to adult men. Read an Excerpt from Stolen Innocence by Elissa Wall

Just Kidding Jtee!!!
I watched the entire Warren Jeffs trial on CourtTV way back, it was pretty weird how simple minded the adults are, some of them are like really polite 10 year olds, it really gave me an insight into FLDS and how shut off they are from the rest of the country...in one testimony the guy spoke so softly and nervously, honestly in the short testimony they had to tell him to speak up dozens of times, he would for a minute and then start mumbling again. |

If God has told them that a 14 year old girl is to marry a man, then that is God's Will and there is nothing left to discuss. It is not that they secretly plan to do things they know are wrong and hide behind their religion, they truly believe that God has told them what to do. That is the nature of fundamentalist thinking in FLDS. |

There is not a lot of free-thinkers in the FLDS, that's another thing I thought during the trial, it was like everybody was reading from the exact same script.
The trial actually weirded me out so many times. And it was very hard for the pros. to get past their belief system, which in most cases was way out of whack with reality, but never did they budge from it. At one point I thought the pros. was about to leap over the desk and start slappin one guy silly yelling "are you listening to yourself?" |

I'm on the waiting list for it. She's a very strong young woman, in spite of, or because of, all that she's been through.

For many years I was, more-or-less, anti-religion because of things like this, but as I sorted through it, I came to a better understanding that it is "fundamentalism" within any religion that is the cancer, not the religion. In the case of FLDS, this means adult men decide the fate of young girls who are born to parents that are member a fringe/fundamentalist branch of FLDS. Adult woman who join of their free will are making a choice to spiritually marry a man who already has other wives, young girls are not given a choice, they are told "God has spoken" and they are to do what God has commanded of them. A 13-14 year old girl has no options when that has been her life from day one. She does have options, she is just not aware of what those other options are. |

| Re: Biography Book: Stolen Innocence by Elissa Wall | | The film footage CourtTV filmed during the trial was weird...they drove through the streets of their community with cameras rolling, mothers were grabbing their kids and racing them into the houses, slamming doors and drawing the curtains... you would think that aliens just landed, and everybody gave them "dagger eyes". Older males were chasing them with tractors and throwing things at them. So much for love thy neighbour eh?
It was completely wierd. |
