Children: Bratchild, my 11 year old daughter, and Monkey, my 9 year old son. | Leg shaving? | | My daughter turned 11 almost 2 months ago. She's the youngest in her class and sometimes feels "left out". Her friends are all older than she is and several of them are shaving their legs. She's been after me to let her, but I'm just sitting here thinking of how much of a pain in the backside shaving is, not for me, but for her. Once she starts, she's pretty much stuck with it.
The bratchild has blond hair. Her leg hair, while fine, is fairly heavy on her legs. She's been shaving her armpits (with my full permission) for a fe months. Because she sweats pretty good, I let her shave them. I know how much that pit hair can hold the smell and stickiness of sweat, and want to spare her that physical discomfort. But there's that part of me that just isn't ready to LET her start on her legs.
But now, it's starting to get cooler. Shorts weather is done and over with. And I find myself thinking, "Maybe this is the time to sit her down and show her how to shave her legs." With it being autumn, her legs won't show any cuts and nicks she may have. It'll give her he time to learn. But I find myself thinking, "11 is just so YOUNG!"
I can't even remember how old I was when I started shaving my legs. Heck, I can't remember exactly how old I was when I got my first period, either! It was just WAY long ago! So, ladies, how old were YOU when you started shaving your legs? When did you start letting your daughters shave? Any particular reason why you did or didn't let them, ect? Please, share. *smile* |

I think it would be a good time to start teaching her, but maybe explain to her about the fact that once she does it she will probably have to do it every couple of days and make sure she's ready for that. It's hard to see you LG getting so big I'm sure. If you aren't ready maybe wait until a month or so before short weather rolls around again then reapproch the subject |

Why is it we can't ever seem to remember exactly the ages we did the things our daughters need to do or will be doing soon? At the time, it seemed so important. And now, it's all important for a whole other reason! *laughs*
I have told her once she starts, she has to keep going. She does understand that much. I think she just wants to feel a little more like her friends. I did manage to buy myself time with her by pointing out one of the girls she was talking about was a girl with a darker complexion and with very thick, dark hair on her head and arms, too. She did drop the subject then, but I think it's time to bring it up with her again and hold a good conversation with her on the topic. |

Children: Hannah, age 6 | Re: Leg shaving? | | Since it is autumn now, I would wait until spring weather comes, and then teach her a few weeks before warm weather.
But if she is in middle school, and has to wear shorts for gym, let her shave 'em now or else she'll get teased. And having to deal with that would be way harder than dealing with her shaving, I promise! |

Children: Nichole | Re: Leg shaving? | | I also don't remember when I sarted but I can tell you that my mom told me no so I did it anyway and cut the crap out of my legs because I didn't use shaving cream. I would say it is better for you to show her how to do it then for her to do it on her own.
Make it a bonding thing. Shave her legs then go and get a pedicure. It could be fun!!! |

Me and nail polish don't get along too well. I tend to make it look like I've been drinking heavily when I polish nails. *grin* |
