When I was in college way back when, the college was very progressive in that it allowed people to select their own roommates of either sex. Campus housing was more like apartments. we had 1,2,3,4 & 5 bedrooms apartments, second year and beyond often were mixed. I was an RA for a couple of years. It was a lot of fun.

jtee, my college had options like that for upper classmen, but not for freshman and sophomores. Under classmen were assigned to small dorm rooms and usually had to share a locker room type bathroom with the entire floor. I'm not sure how things are now, but the only male/female combinations were married students, and they had special apartments apart from the other dorms.

Trina, I went to TESC, a very very liberal arts college. So liberal that it attracted a very high percentage of extremists who really were off the map with their ideas. I'm pretty opened minded, but that place made me looked like a right wing conservative. I remember defending Christians on campus because they were such a minority on campus, and for the most part disliked.

One time I was verbally reprimanded harshly by a guy because I used the term "Environmentalist" to describe him. He told him he wasn't a environmentalist he was a "Humanist", and his efforts to save the trees, the whales, etc, etc wasn't about the environment, it was about saving mankind. He truly was pissed off at me, but he basically was just a pissed off person who was angry about a lot of things. I just happen to made the mistake of talking to him. . I would say that my college experience was when I learned there very little difference between a radical liberal and radical Conservative. They both dwell on hate and what is wrong in the world, but they look at the same problems from opposite ends

Anyway, the college allowed any student to pick there roommates no matter what year they were in.

Wow, that sounds very liberal, especially considering the time frame. My college started out as a Teachers' College and grew from there. Freshman year I was in an all girls dorm, and males weren't allowed in the building past 10 pm. Of course, girls snuck their BFs in, but if caught there were serious consequences. There are dorms with both males and females, but they are separated by wings or floors. Of course, this is in New England, which has always been more conservative than out west. LOL!

I know a guy who shares an apartment with 3 girls, they just thought it would be safer to have a guy living there.
