Thanks Claire. Interesting that the kids are required to keep their phones in their lockers; makes perfect sense. I don't think our daughter school has that rule, and it makes me wonder why; it seems like a good idea. So far not too many of her close friends have cell phones, so they aren't pressuring her to get a phone yet. I suspect that once 1-2 of her key friends gets one, she'll be asking for one too. Currently they are really into IM in the evenings.

Mindy, our daughter does not have a cell yet, but when we do get her one, we probably wouldn't disable text messaging. Our daughter does a lot of IM on her computer, but it is limited a approved list of friends\family, so she is not getting IMs from people we don't know about.

jtee - They have that rule in middle school, but not in high school. I think it's great because they could really be a distraction, especially just after a kid gets one. A lot of my son's friends have phones, but that didn't really influence our decision to get him one.

Mindy - I am not really worried about what he is texting about, because he and his friends are really only interested in sports, skateboarding, tv etc. I did check his texts once, just out of curiosity, and they were all very innocent.
