Default Anyone have a daughter in the Marines?

My daughter (18) has signed up for the Marines. She has been down a rough road..and without getting into too much...I think she feels that this is the last resort to get her life straight. Why she picked the toughest of the tough to join, I will never know. Everyone tells me this will change her for the good...but I am hesitant to believe anything can break her ruthless and horrible spirit! If you have a troubled daughter who has joined the Marines or the service...how positive was the result for you and your daughter?

Well not my daughter but my closest friend. We met when we were in 7th grade. She had a very religious very tight gripped mother. Wouldn't let her do anything.... and I mean anything. So she did what any 16 year old girl would do. She rebelled BAD. She was into drinking and pot and staying out all night. Not sure if she was sleeping around at this point. She ended up moving in with my family when she was almost 17 and lived with us for that year. At first it was great, she was doing better in school and everything else. Then it became home, so she went back to her old ways. In the end she decided that she needed to get her life together and joined teh Marines. My dad is retired marines and my brother also served in the Marines, now Army. She told people that asked her why she joined the Marines and she told them becuase when her own family would not except her for who she was, a Marine family did.
She is now 28 years old, stationed in San Diego California as a Sgt in the Marines. She has a 7 month old baby that she is exclusivly nursing and pumping for, when she is at work. She is single, the babies father is also in the Marines but we are not sure if he is going to be a stand up guy or not at this point (different story) But even on her own, raising her baby on her own, she has a very nice apartment a nice car and is able to buy anthing that baby needs, and lots of things the baby does not need. The marines give her a steady job, medical care for free, life insurance for free. If it wasn't for the Marines she would be on government aid, instead she is supporting herself and her child.
She is scared that she may be called to go to Iraq, as I am since I lost my brother there I know how rough that place can be. But he is more concerned about who will take care of the baby if she has to go. So yes there is that risk. But in the scheme of htings the Marines are taking very good care of her.

I wish your daughter the best and will pray for her safety both in the states and outside

I don't have a daughter in the Marines, but I am in the Navy and so is my husband.

The military is different for everyone, all people handle it differently. My husband was in the same situation that you daughter was in. My husband's father did a lot of drugs and his brother ended up following the trend. His brother, his best friends, and his dad all ended up in jail and my husband joined the Navy to save himself from going the same route. The first year was hard because he fell in to the wrong crowd, but he managed to pick himself up and is much better because of it.

I would say that the military helped me out to learn some discipline and have more respect for myself and others. But I've also met people who just rebel against the rules.

Marines are the most dedicated people I've met in the service. When she makes it though she'll be a lot stronger, not just physically but mentally. The female Marines that I've ever met love it and wouldn't chose another branch to serve in.

I think at the end of the day any career choice that is legal and honest should be applauded. Besides, can anyone who has only been on the planet for 18 years really be written off as having a ruthless and horrible spirit?
