I remember a summer or two ago a girl was in Aruba and disappeared. She was there with her high school class and it was part of their graduation gift..like "The Senior Trip".

I am not the sort to allow my kids to go out of the country with a group, unless they are over 21. Would you allow your son or daughter to make this type of trip at the age those students did?

My stepson Lewis is going away next summer for a fortnight with 11 other lads. All but one of them will be 18 when they leave. Two weeks in Spain and whilst there are concerns, my husbands fine with it. If the others want to do something like that when they get to 18 (and they can pay for it), despite the risks - and teven if they're with family there are still risks - I can't see it being objected to here.

I would never personally buy a gift like this for a child, and yes 18 is a child still. But at teh same time if my 18 year old saved up money to go and then went, well not much I could do about it. Of course I would hound her about calling me and staying with the group kinds of htings.

I went on a trip with the spanish club during senior year in high school. There were alot of supervision. I think it's important on what parents and teachers go on trips. They need to always know where their kids are.

News stories are scary, but you're child is probably more in danger getting in a traffic accident down the block than getting kidnapped in a foreign country.

I would let my kids travel abroad if there were safeguards and supervision. The eldest son (15) of a good friend of mine went on a 2 week trip to work with refugees from Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It was a life changing experience for him!

I think that I would be wary of any trip that involved minors going off by themselves just to party.

It would depend on the country, the level of supervision, and my kid. Some kids are more trustworthy then others. Some are more street smart and aware their surroundings then others.

Another option if you want your child to have the experience but are worried about the supervision is to volunteer to go along.

I would have volunteered to go along but while kidnapping can happen it is not likely. What happened to Natalee Holloway is awful and tragic but also completely random.

I'd have to agree with that! It's like being afraid to travel by air when the most dangerous part of your trip is the drive to and from the airport.
