I don't think that punishment is in order - unless you want to go out on a limb and call him a liar and face the possibility of losing his respect. I bet he's really sorry and upset about it.

Having said that, I think it's a good idea to help him to help fix this problem that he caused. Driving a car is a responsibility - it's ALWAYS your fault when you rear end someone: driving is about more than just avoiding doing the bare minimum wrong things - it's about doing all the right things.

I don't think you should punish him. The fault is ultimately yours. You let your son out on the roads without teaching him that complete attention is required at all times. You forgot to teach him the Zero Mistake attitude when driving. You should be thankful that he or his sisters weren't hurt, let alone any strangers.

Years of experience and observation.
EVERY time I get cut off, or see someone zoom past me, or have to stop short... I look for the P plate... and I ALWAYS find it.

uh... Probationary plate. Don't you have them?

You get your license after you're 18, and you have to show a red square P in your front and back windows for 3 years before you get your full license.

I would ground him and probably let him do some housework to redeem what he has done. Teens need lessons, even it is "accident". Accident happens, but better not let happen again.

EVERY time I get cut off, or see someone zoom past me, or have to stop short....I look for the driver to be on a cell phone or a kid, and it is ALWAYS one of those two.

Canada has a similar program and much tougher driving exams. I've been told 85% of all drivers fail on their first attempt because they will fail a person after 1-2 minor mistakes, such as not looking in ALL you mirrors before turning, or changing stations on the radio while driving.

I hate cell phone drivers, they are in lala land. These are the people who drive to the mall with sleeping baby, get out of the while still on the phone, forgetting they have baby in the back seat. Maybe 10 minutes later when they get off the phone they sudden think "Hmmm something is missing....OH my God!!!".

I don't understand those who forget their kids in the car. OMG I have never left any kid that I was responsible for in a car and I have gotten out of the car, gotten on the phone (I don't talk while driving but I will park and immediately return a call), or had a million things on my mind or whatever and NEVER forgotten a kid in the car. If I see a small child alone in the car (like in the grocery parking lot) I get security or call the authorities because damnit kids die in hot cars and it's all over the news.
