Default What activities can seniors do?

I think that it would be nice if we can get the elderly to do something to stay active, what can they do at such a fraile frame and age?

An hour of walk every morning can be a great activity for elders. This is a very simple exercise but has a lot of benefits for them. A mind exercise is also good for them. Try to play with your elders scrabble or chess.

Ha ha. My dad gets a headache every time I challenge him to a game. My sister advised me to let him win a game or to for him to enjoy it.

I would have to agree with the walking and also swimming is very good for the elderly. I know my mom has just joined a swim/exercise program at the YMCA and she is loving it.

Seniors can do just about anything they feel up to and doesn't scare the pants off their doctor.

it really just depends on what they feel they are up to. I know a lady in her late 70's who still figure skates competitively she hits the ice 5 days a week, another lady in her 70's who plays volleyball once a week. There's a lady at our health club who is in her late 80's and she's there everyday working out harder than I ever do.

I am a recreation therapist...I work with a diverse population at a local nursing facility...We have a plethora of activities for the senior residents....They seem to enjoy Bingo the most but they are also into ; walking with relatives, crafts, taking in a movie(especially from their era), social events like parades or community based entertainments..chinese auctions, try taking the senior to a marina or to a nature preserve....just some ideas...
The best advice I ever got was from an older man in his 80's at my VA hospital where I volunteered...it's amazing what you can learn by just talking with a senior...who better to ask?

I personally believe our seniors are a genuinely valuable resource that so few actually tap into. They are so wise and wonderful. These people should be treasured
