This is why I am skeptical of such news stories. There is a lot of unanswered practical questions that make me think that there is more to these kind of stories than a father keeping his daughter as sex slave for 24 years.
On public radio (This American Life) they did a story about a man being labeled a Sexual Preditor by a local TV station that was in last place in the ratings. The TV statation had it as their lead story for several weeks running. In that same market/city, no other TV, Radio, or newspapers would touch the story because they did their homework first and looked at all facts. Yes, technically the man had been convicted of a sex crime, but it was 15 years earlier when he was 20 and he had concentual sex with a 15 year old girl. But... That is a boring news story, it much more interesting to label him a sexual preditor and spin everything he has done in his life as evil. If he goes to a PTA meeting with his wife, or coaches little league, it is much more interesting to speculate he is seeking to have sex with kids, rather than to say he has been a law abidding parent and citizen for 15 years.
Some News makers exploit fear and paranoria because it means $$$$; the truth is only of value to them if the truth=$$$$.
