Uh, this can and did fly for all of the twelve years I attended public school. If you got sent to the office for a transgression punishable by swats, they checked to see if you had a parental consent form on file for swats. If you did, you got swats. If you didn't, parents were called and alternative consequences were given. I know this because throughout my school career I received my fair share of swats. I didn't die as a result and my Mom certainly didn't come running to the school shouting "You abused my kid." at the top of her lungs.
The "current kid problem" I mentioned is precisely what the school in the article was experiencing. If your kid responds better to non physical discipline, great for you and your kid, but don't make the mistake of assuming that every kid is like yours or that every parent is like you.
Today's educators more than ever need to regain control of schools and classrooms. We need to help them do so, not hinder them further.
