My son has gained a very large amount of weight with no reason
Disclaimer: I am not from an English-speaking country, so please excuse any grammar/spelling mistakes you find in this post. Also, I'm not very interested in this forum. I only came here and posted 5 generic replies (in order to open this thread) because this is the first place I've found to share my problem.
Oh, and sorry for this thread being a bit too long.
I am 33 years old and I live in one house with my 30 year old wife, 9 year old son and 7 year old daughter. Non of us is overweight, and beside my wife who had a small weight problem after her first birth, nobody in our family ever had problems maintaining his weight.
That is, before my son started getting fat.
Up until a year ago, maybe a year and a half, my son was very skinny. According to the many BMI charts found throughout the internet, he was right between the "normal weight" and "underweight" categories. He used to be very active and he loved going on fishing trips with me and play soccer with some other kids in the neighborhood.
Then, suddenly, without any warning, he started drastically putting on weight. None of his lifestyle or eating habits were changed, so me and my wife thought it was simply a hormonal reaction. At the time I've read on the internet that kids tend to gain weight right before a big increase in height, so we decided to ignore his gain.
However, as the months went by it's become clear that this is not the case. He kept gaining weight, most of which went at first to his arms and legs, but when my wife noted that he is developing a gut (she is the one who used to shower him) we both agreed that we should put him on a diet.
But even with the diet, he kept gaining weight. I slowly noticed how his lifestyle has changed, and how he stopped going out to the playground and spent more time in front of the TV. Eventually, he starting coming home from school and claiming that some bullies called him "chubby" or "fat" and other mean words. He didn't appear very upset because of this at the time, but he seems to have developed a low self esteem because of that. In fact, he started to become ashamed of his body, often refusing to take off his shirt even in places like the pool or the beach.
He even gets teased by his little sister for his weight now; the fact that she is much thinner than him has created quite a tension between the two.
The point is, our son is now 9 year old (soon to be 10) now weights 39-40 kilograms and is about 1.30-1.35 meters high. He has a big belly and a double chin, yet he isn't aware enough of the connection between his excess fat and his overeating to stop gaining weight.
Any tips and/or help for this situation?

First of all, this is incredibly rude and pointless:

Why exactly is it even NECESSARY for you to declare that you are not interested in the forum? I mean really? Wow.
And obviously if your son never changed eating habbits and started gaining weight for no reason, you even say that you put him on a diet and he continued to gain, then you should have him seen by a doctor. That's not normal and it doesn't make sense. You should rule out any medical problems before anything else, since the usual things such as dieting etc have not helped. Have you ever heard of thyroid disorders and the like? He may need medical treatment.

And I am not very interested in someone who just came here to get perfect strangers to spend their time helping him, while he has no intention of ever even attempting to return the favour.
I'm sorry, life doesn't work like that.

Im gonna give blunt advice. Hire a personal trainer if you care enough and can't help them yourself. also hire a life, etiquette, spiritual, and baseball coaches to help you learn how to present yourself to others.
-edit the above posters are VERY NICE and WONDERFUL people brimming with knowlage and advice that could empower you and your child for the rest of your lives. I don't want you to go away thinking were all jerks here but as many of our children will say, "you started it".

Okay, I entered this thread ready to help... now I'm not sure that's a good idea (fearing that other forum members will kill me - not physically of course).
He must have had a really terrible English teacher. I'm just hoping that something went wrong while he was translating the above....
