Default Need advice.. 8.5 year old has terrible fits.

My 8.5 year old daughter is well adjusted, does well in school, has lots of friends, sociable, makes friends in minutes, strives to be the teacher's pet.

But, she has incredible fits during which she turns off all sense of reason. These can occur once or twice a day.

What has gotten me concerned is that during fits she can run out of the house, cross a street, and she has said during a fit that she "wants to die".(RED FLAGS) she will also kick her mother, yell, cry etc.

To precipitate a fit, anything can happen, Eg. someone knocked over some of her books, her brother makes a weird face at her, parents ask her to put something downstairs, got the white cookie and not the brown one.

Trying to reason with her during a fit, promising a reward if she can get over it, or punishment if she can't, have all been mostly ineffective.

After a fit, we can reason with her and she will apologize.

Any experience with this? Any suggestions?

I dont want to scare you but this probably will.

My brother had a similar deal with his son. It reached a head when he called 911 and told the police his parents were trying to kill him. He was about the same age as your daughter

What they found out is that he was having little mini seizures. Like a small short circuit.

He takes medicine and as far as I know hasn't had another occurrence for 7 or 8 years. If I remember correctly it took a little time to get the dosage correct.

I would recommend a doctor visit for this

I can find out.

I just sent my bro a note. I'll post back when he replies.

this is the reply my brother sent me.

Quote:
I would have to go look it up but it was the gran mal (probably not spelled correctly). If he is having seizures, they should take him to a doctor as soon as possible. We were told that the quicker they can provide medication to stop the seizures, the easier it is to stop the seizures. If medication is not taken, the seizures will occur more frequently and more severe.

We had problems with XXXXX because the one of the first medications that he was prescribed, XXXXX had a bad reaction. What was really bad was that the dr. he was seeing had us increase the dosage…she thought he needed more medication when in reality, he was having a bad reaction to the medication-not seizures. They had to slowly take him off the medication and then (after switching drs.) he was put on the medication (Lamictal) which he has had very good luck with. In fact, he had 2 tests that came back normal. His neurologist believes XXXXX has outgrown the seizures but is keeping him on the medication as he is still growing and wants to wait another year before taking him off the medication.

Anyway, you should tell your friend to take their child to a neurologist as soon as possible.
I X'd out my nephew's name What I remember at the time was it was'nt the classic Seizure. shaking passing out ect. It was more freaking out think and acting on very bad idea's. I'm kinda suprised my brother replied at all. They dont like to talk about it.
