Default Thanks P & G

So, has anyone else who's been watching Olympic coverage on NBC been irrritated with P&G for their "Thanks Mom" ads? Sure on the surface they are touching and heart-warming but I can't help but feel a little excluded and devalued by them.

So, those who live beyond NBC's reach, it's a series of ads where they show olympic athletes, then make a tie back to one of thier products, i.e their laundry detergent that got our all those stains from their practices through the years of preparation and then end with the simple tag: "Thanks Mom"

As the parent who does 95% of the laundry in our household I too immediate offense to that. I think it was very short sighted and exclusive to single out moms as being the sole source of their childrens preparations for the olympics...okay, I know that's not explicitly what they said, but it's kind of like they said to me - Dad, stay out of this and just pick up the kids from practice...

touch a nerve with anyone else?

Well, it didnt really touch a nerve until you said something about it. I think it was just them saying "ya, both parents do laundry but chances are the majority is mothers" I get it I mean what are they going to say instead of "Thanks Mom"?

Thanks Parents? that's catchy...not

and I think it was meant to be more towards moms because typically they are more sentimental when it comes to their kids. Dont get me wrong...touch my kids and see what I do. but with Amber, if they do the smallest things she is all tears.

Oh, by the way, for anyone who hasnt seen it, here is the 1 minute commercial

sure and typically men drive better than women, men are better at sports, irish people drink a lot, black people rob people. Just because it's cute or poingiant doesn't make perpetuating the stereotype right. And sure they are fully entitled to advertise this way as much as I'm fully able to point out it's wrong and not buy their products. okay, not really, and they know it. They're P&G, they know we can never completely cut them out of our lives.

I would guess that statistically mom's buy more laundry detergent than dad's.

Everything they do is based off the numbers.

Their going to let you have the beer commercials. Their the better commercial's anyway.

If it were up to me I would have a gallon of 99 cent suave shampoo (who am I kidding bar soap is fine) sitting in the shower. But they dont sell to me.

They sell to DW who has a small fortune invested in hair products.

Basically what I was trying to say. They also like the catchy slogan "thanks mom" And they realize that catchy slogan is probably going to sell more products than some generic one.

Ya,been there...she's toned it down a little though.

Oh, and I know it sounds weird coming from an recovered/recovering alcoholic, but I would much rather have the beer commercials.

I cut them out all the time...

Of the newspaper. lol They have great coupons.

But for real, you're right and that is pretty discriminative. Its almost offensive to moms too, to be honest. I mean, I don't look too deeply into these things, but I do agree with where you are coming from. They could have come up with something better, in my opinion.

I understand about the numbers and that advertising by it's very nature feeds off sterotypes but as Luke once said (Cool Hand, not apostle): "Calling it your job don't make it right, Boss"

Just bringing to light another example of american advertising devauling the role of Dad in the family, that's all.

I agreee IADad....it's amazing how dad's get zero credit even in this world where dad's are so much more involved.

And of course it focuses on how every mom belongs in the laundry room doing the laundry or in the kitchen making a sandwich.

lol
