Default Would you do this for your young adult living at home

Ok so after just now annoying the crap out of my mom with my short attention span she not only drugged me but offered to get me more drugs...

I'm only slightly kidding..

She gave me a muscle relaxer because I was whining about the back pain(possible disc issue.)
And she agreed to go visit her doctor, talk about some fake adult ADHD issues she's "having" and getting an adderall prescription for me....because I have no health insurance and can't pay $300 a month -.-

Would you do something like this if your kid couldn't get health insurance and you had health insurance?

I know, like multiple felonies in itself but yeh the health insurance system would bleed me dry..

The question. Would I go to the doctor claim a ailment to get care for a uninsured child with a legitimate problem? Yes.

In this specific case. Probably not. Medication for ADHD is for when it presents a significant disruption to living a normal life. Its not a recreational drug by any stretch of the definition. I.E. Most people who take this type of medicine would prefer not to have to take it. In other words it really doesnt have any pleasant effects other than you can focus long enough on task to have a life.

There are plenty of drugs which are pleasant. This is not one.

IMHO

It really does affect me.
I have like a 2.6 GPA, I think...I couldn't even handle the ONE class a week I was taking and drop the 2nd part to that class.

Trust me, I've taken Celebrex, Flexoril, Vicodin, Percocet, Lexapro, uhm, Meclizine. I have taken my fair share of medications that make you feel sick and other side effects but I either felt happier because of them or had no pain...which was totally worth it.

Right now I took a flexoril, its one powerful muscle relaxer, I can't help but randomly glaze over and just start staring into space.
When I am on the pain killers for my back I usually feel like puking since Vicodin and percocet make me feel sick to my stomach and I itch like hell.

Anything to make me focus and be able to get back to school is welcome in my book.

Today was an ok day for me but it could have been worse, I did have my moments where I was being a little loud and disruptive and fidgety but I tried to fight through that.

Im probably going to pass out soon, that muscle relaxer is kicking my butt.

haha Meclizine is used to treat motion sickness. I heart that medicine, I have always had the worst motion sickness. I can't ride in the car and I can't ride almost anything at amusement parks. Eli has it too, poor unlucky baby. And actually, turns out its excellent for morning sickness as well. So that's... kind of something you would take to NOT be sick. lol But I hear ya on the pain meds thing, Vikes and hydros and whatnot make me SOOOO sick. I'm really sensitive to them though, I can't take them at all. I had surgery when I was 18 and I didn't take any pain medicine for it because I couldn't stop throwing up on any of them. Crappy!! lol They offered me pain meds after having Eli and I was like nooooo thank you haha. I have a pretty good pain tolerance though.

And yes, I would go to the doctor and fake needing something so that I could get it for my uninsured child. No questions asked. (what meds and what situation, aside of course)

No I wouldn't, I would also hope there aren't any doctors out there who have so little knowledge that someone could possibly fake an illness, if they're are they need their medical licence revoking immediately.

no.
a few things that just come to mind right off...
its a can of worms not even worth opening.
this would go on your mom's insurance so there's the insurance fraud with fines, loss of insurance, and some possible jail time (not sure about that one) then there's how the rx's are written out- i know the drs go by your weight. you could end up dying from taking an rx not written esp for your body's system.
the insurance fraud alone raises costs for EVeryone here in the us. it gets passed on to us all. sure all those folks out there without insurance are passing the cost of their medical care on to others by going to the er and never paying any of the medical bills but Fraud costs as much as not paying the medical bills.
then there's the fact that if YOU have a bad reaction to the meds you're pretty much fcked unless you want to explain how you are taking someone else's meds and where you got them.
the physicians need to be able to monitor the patient they write an rx for. esp. those sorts of drugs. everyone with a child or even had any experience with those particular kind have a pretty good idea of what the negative and positive side affects are and have to keep a close watch for any adverse affects from those things so they can be changed as needed. your mom may not be able explain to the dr exactly what sort of reactions you're having to the drug unless she actually took you in to see him/her.
another, if your mom got caught giving you meds that didn't belong to you then there would be problems for your brother. it could/most likely would end up with CPS on her doorstep and lose custody of your brother. physicians have to report that stuff even if your mom was only try to help you. would you want that to happen to him???
then there's the fact that if you got caught taking a drug not your own then you could end up with a bad rap for drug use which in the end could cost you your career in law enforcement or at the very least it would go in your record that you have a drug problem which causes you problems with moving up the ladder.

as hard as it is to get health care there a few options like working two jobs, or going to the department of public health to see if you qualify for medicaid or just going to the e.r and telling them you need help with your nerves or whatever.
either way the e.r. and the dhs offices both can refer you to people in your city that can help those who need it for prescriptions and mental illnesses.
i know in my area there is something called the Andrews Center which provides behavioral health services. its what alot of low income folks without insurance and/or any income in the area have to use. their homepage even says "Children and adolescents with ADHD, emotional or behavioral disturbance, mental illness or mental retardation may be helped by our children’s specialists."
which i know they do help from having seen it in various people i've come into contact with through out my short life.

Yeh but I'm not a child or adolescent...I am an adult and I don't qualify under those programs anymore.

And I have been without health insurance for quite a bit and I have been to the ER quite a few times in that time period w/o insurance and its taking a toll I owe some money that I am not able to pay off. And those were for bodily injuries, breaking my foot, the concussion my mom gave me etc..

And I am working on getting those jobs but still I am having a hard time coming to terms with paying how much I have to pay for health insurance because of what little it gives back to me and covers. I've looked at plans, its insane how much i'd pay for how little i'd get.
I'm working on getting a job at 7-11 and Panera, I don't see how that is going to pay for anything. It'll be another month before I can even think about just LOOKING at insurance again, then theres getting the insurance and it being active, then finding a doctor who takes the insurance, scheduling the first appointment for the basic check up and then scheduling a second appointment to talk about the ADHD and my back.

And yes thats how it works here. You have to have a basic check up first appointment at a new doctor..which runs about $98 and then you can schedule a second one for your issues.

It'll be well into the summer before I get anything at all.

I feel like I am being royally screwed over unless I find a job that pays for my insurance, which at 20 with no qualifications is hard.
