Re: Which one is better for 5-yr girl, Karate or Taekwondo?
Azriel plays the cello, he went straight into it, violin and cello are very different apparently.
He knew piano and guitar beforehand though. Apparently piano is pretty generally considered a 'starting point' for kids interested in music, because it teaches them to read the notes better than the other instruments do, dont ask em why, im not musical in the slightest, all I know is what Dita and Azriel have told me, theyre the musicians in our family.

No,My son never played any other instrument, M9mom, but his grandmother was a talented violin player, my son was actually very good on the cello.
Like I said our school does this program every summer for the kids and I believe the cello was one of the instruments available at that time. It wasn't necessarily his first choice. lol
But he stayed with it for two years than decided he wanted to stop. His teacher was disappointed but it wasn't a good idea to force him to keep playing.
I think I have a pic of him playing which I will post if I find it, lol

He must have good music gene. I heard that cello/violin/viola are harder than any key board instrument like piano.

Re: Which one is better for 5-yr girl, Karate or Taekwondo?
I don't think there's any point in comparing stringed instruments to piano or wind instruments. My degree is in French Horn performance. I heard all my life, "Ohhh, French Horn, that's the hardest instrument to play...." I hated it.
It's like trying to compare being good at swimming to being good at baseball, or having a knack for writing versus a penchant for physics. They're just different, there's no point to comparing.
The reason Piano is in general a good starter instrument is that producing sound from it is mechanically easier. You pres a key, it makes a sound, so you can use that and teach reading music and reading rhythm. It's harder to teach string or winds from the same starting point, which is why some methods remove or decrease the music reading component for the young beginners, so they can just focus on the mechanics of making the sounds, then they add back the music reading skills.

Thanks for the professional information! What I was wondering is whether hearing can be trained? You know, when some people sing, they can never find the right tone. How can they make the right sound in violin? If a kid doesn't have good ears, is it better to learn piano?

Re: Which one is better for 5-yr girl, Karate or Taekwondo?
If youre still talking about a 5yr old, she's way too young to tell if she has good 'ears' or not.
Azriel may be in a gifted music program now, but when he was five his idea of playing the piano after lessons was "LOUD LOUD LOUD"
If she wants to give piano a shot, then give her the opportunity, if she likes it, then as she gets older she can move on to other instruments, if not, then thats the end of that.

She wants violin instead of piano. There is a girl in her class playing violin. (5 yr too. That girl actually started at the age of 3.) My daughter was so "jealous" that she asked for violin too. I told her piano is easier. But she wouldn't listen. I just worried that probably she doesn't have "good ears".
