Cute "Baby" talk
My wife and I got into an argument over cute baby talk. My daughter is 17 months old and doing very well with speech. She know close to 100 works and is starting to put 2 works together like "what's that" and "bed please". Anyway, she has baby words for a few items. For instance, she calls blanky a "binty". Now, I think binty is cute and I repeat it to her that way. Am I wrong to do that? My wife keeps tell me to stop.
Also, my mother takes care of her 1/2 days and when she feeds her, she tell my daughter "Um, Um". My wife hates that and want me to confront my mom. Is she making too big of a deal over this or am I being too lax of a father? Thanks!

Re: Cute "Baby" talk
I'm not a fan of baby talk at all. I speak to her as if she were an adult. Well not completely like an adult but I call things by the correct name.
I get irritated when people do "baby" talk to her. I correct people when they do. I simply tell them that I would appreciate it if they didn't talk to her that way and if they would please talk to her normal.
The "Um Um" wouldn't bother me. I tell my daughter "nein nein" to get her to chew. She's a year old so my situation is a little different.

I didn't like baby talk either. But I am a little different - I don't like a lot of slang either. My degree is in English so I tend to like correct spelling and grammar, so I talk to my daughter the same way.

I'm not a fan of baby talk either. We always talked to our kids using proper terms, etc.. Sure, it's OK to use cutesy words every now and then, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Re: Cute "Baby" talk
I don't see the big deal if its just a few things. I never personally called anything a baby name, but doesn't mean if my dd called her paci a binky that I wouldn't have called it that either.

Re: Cute "Baby" talk
Neither my husband nor I use baby terms for anything. But both sets of grandparents sometimes do. Actually, my MIL does it a lot. I just grit my teeth and work hard on not saying anything. Baby talk won't delay their speech, and they will hear the proper terms from us. It also doesn't hurt them to learn that some folks do things wron...err, differently. I just add it to the list of things my MIL does that annoys me.

Re: Cute "Baby" talk
Im not sure if its right, but it IS adorable! One of the 3 year olds at my stepmoms day care says "checkup" instead of ketchup and "chicken" instead of kitchen. "The checkup is in the chicken." Its very cute, but he is smarter than people think- we had him say it once, for a laugh, and he came back with a plate of raw chicken that was thawing (wrapped in plastic). They sometimes, once they reach a certain age, know that its not really the proper term, but who doesn't like making a bunch of people laugh?

Re: Cute "Baby" talk
My youngest twin did this and I let her. She called her pacifier a fa fa. She calls her blanket a blankey. She also used to say "my love you" and I always said "my love you too" She eventually grew out of it when she started school. Love it while it's there. Have you met adults that still use those words?? no, and neither will she. She's a baby..keep her little for a bit longer. Sheesh
