Default Summer and Special Needs

I always worry about summer and special needs students because the possibility of losing ground in the months away from classroom structure can lead to profound set backs.

What services are available for you and your special needs son or daughter during the summer?

A lot of times if a child with special needs is in significant "danger" of losing ground over the summer than summer services at a reduced amount of time from the regular school year will be part of his/her IEP. Otherwise it's a good idea to ask providers for some suggestions of activities to continue at home over the summer. The hardest part is getting a child so reliant on routine used to not having the same one.

My daughter was receiving speech in her pre-school. When school was over, I noticed a significant problem in her speech. We had an appt with her doc, who gave us a script for her to get OT, PT, and speech thru the local re-hab hospital. It was wonderful, and kept her on schedule for this school year.
