positive discipline by Jane Nelson

unlike most of the other books, it goes against conventional wisdom and focuses on long term solutions instead of a short-term fix

If you are looking for books on how to parent, I don't really have a good suggestion. But some books to help parents are the What to expect series. I have all of them and they are great.

"What to expect when expecing."
"What to expect in the the first year."
"What to expect in the Toddler years."

Basically, it breaks down the child's development month by month and helps you learn how the child will grow and develop and what they will need as they grow. For my first, it was great as I had no idea what to expect ( ). I still use the books as reference for my second.

I get most of my advice from online parenting sites

But I will say my dr told me to throw the book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" away.
