Old School Discipline
Did Corporal Punishment Save A Struggling School? | Newsweek Education | Newsweek.com
I truly hope this catches on...again. I got swats when I was in school. I wasn't abused. I wasn't psychologically or emotionally damaged. There is and always will be a HUGE difference between a swat and abuse. The stubborn refusal of so called "modern" parents and educators to acknowledge this is why these same parents and educators have no control over the children in their homes and classrooms. Is corporal punishment the only way to effectively discipline a child? Of course not, but it should definitely always be an option IMO.

I agree with this 100%, however I would not allow anyone else to put their hands on my child

My Mom had no problem giving school permission to swat me if need be. I also had more consequences waiting for me at home if I got swats at school. There was one time that I felt I did not deserve to get swats. I plead my case to my Mom. She went to school, talked to the teacher and a couple of kids that witnessed my supposed transgression. After hearing the facts, Mom sided with me, told the teacher to make sure she had all of the facts before she swatted someone. We went home, life went on. If after going to school my Mom had determined that the teacher was justified and I was feeding her a line of BS, I would have been in big trouble.
I think there are some kids that need that constant possibility of instant unpleasant consequences to keep themselves in line. Not every kid is like that. Unfortunately a lot are.

Re: Old School Discipline
personally if there's a problem with my child I'd rather handle it myself. I totallt agree that not all parents are willing to handle their children these days though, I'm shocked by the number of kids these who have no respect for anybody

I agree with this 100%.
I don't care if the teachers have "authority" over their students, its not their place to "swat" my child. Send him to the VPs office.

I agree that parental consent should be required before an educator administers corporal punishment. That gives the parent an opportunity to handle the problem.
It will likely never be this way, but I'd like to see schools be allowed to use corporal punishment unless they had written documentation from the parent not allowing it. This would allow educators to discipline the children of parents who are too lazy to be actual parents.

Re: Old School Discipline
I'm not really sure how that would work though. I have to imagine that most of today's parents likely not allow it and the ones who would, have kids who probably wouldn't need it anyways. It seems to me that parents are afraid to discipline their kids

Re: Old School Discipline
Corporal punishment should be handed out to the parents instead of the kids. I'm sure the kids would straighten out fairly quickly after that.

Re: Old School Discipline
The problem with punishment like this at school is where do they draw the line? Talking out of turn deserves a smack on the hand but being caught skipping class or cheating on a test is what? have a chair thrown at them?
