Default Night Time Potty Training

Hi guys.

Eli is completely potty trained during the day now. He goes potty regularly when at home, and he tells me when he has to do so. He's VERY good about it!! Earlier I was in the bathroom doing my hair and he starts pounding on the door yelling "Pee potty! Pee potty! Pee potty!" lol. For now, when we go out only, he wears a pull-up. He loves them because they have cars on them and its a big deal for him not to pee in them haha. He hasn't peed in them yet, even if we're driving in the car he'll tell me "pee potty!" and I'll make it a point to stop asap to get him to a toilet and he waits for it. He's doing so amazing, he's such a smart boy! I'm very proud of him.

My question is on potty training at night. I'm not even really sure where to begin with it. I've bought some night time pull-ups, but as of right now he's still in diapers at night. He doesn't really seem to have any concept or control over that area of potty training right now. I'm not in any huge hurry or anything, its not a very big deal to me, but I know it has to come sometime. When will he be ready for this? Will I know? How do I teach him what to do? How long should I wait before trying? How old were your kids? What did you do? Was it hard? How long were your kids potty trained before being night time potty trained? I don't want to rush into things and have tons of accidents and crying. I can wait as long as I need to, but I don't remember night time training with any of my siblings so I'm drawing a blank LOL. I am kind of looking for some insight and experiences from all of you with potty trained kids. I have NO idea how to teach him how to do this, or when the right time is to teach him, or how I will know he's ready. Please help?

Oh, and one of the main problems is, as I've mentioned before Eli sleeps with a sippy cup. So he gets a lot of fluids at night before bed. Although I'm quite aware that it would be ideal for night time potty training for him to let this go, I definitely don't think he's ready to do that yet. That would involve a lot of crying and stress that I'm not ready to put him through just yet. Things could easily change, but my agenda right now would be to cut him off of the night time sippy cup at probably around three years old. If that IS the case, should I just not even bother trying to night time train him until he's three (and or off of the night time cup)? Or does that seem kind of crazy since he's already day-time potty trained? Geez! lol everything has to be so difficult. I don't know!

Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

You have to wait until the body stabilises, no one will ever be dry at night until their levels of ADH increase at night, ADH inhibits urine production, thats why morning wee is normally quite concentrated. That is why most doctors wont see a child for night time wetting until 8 years old.

Jackson was dry at night when he was 4, Melia was 3, Jake isn't dry yet, Jade has been dry for a few weeks now every now and again she will have an accident though.

You might find this interesting
66% of three year olds are dry at night
75% of four year olds are dry at night
80% of five year olds are dry at night

for debralyn I set an alarm and got up, woke her and took her to the bathroom twice in the night, although in the end she night trained herself...lol We didn't really do anything special, she just started getting up and going at night.

Interesting! Well, that's kind of what I thought it was along the lines of. I really appreciate the info, and the personal insight. Thank you. That makes me feel a little better.

Whenever I thought he would be ready, my idea would be the same, to wake him up maybe twice at night to take him (because honestly, he sleeps next to me and often I'll feel his diaper to see if he needs changed and he stays dry for a LONG time sometimes). That's nice to know they just kind of "get it" eventually though!! lol How old was she when she did that? (though I know girls are generally faster learners than boys).

It sounds like Eli is coming along very good in potty training, good to hear. Elliott tells us sometimes when he has to go, but usually it's an excuse to get naked. I dont mind false alarms though!

They do it when they are ready, some kids it happens at the same time they day train, and other kids take much longer. I still put Aiden in a diaper even though he wakes up dry...I know the first time I don't he will have an accident. Vanna was my earliest the other kids all took a few months to get it.
