Default Friends

Do you mostly like your kids' friends? If you didn't, what would you do about it?

For me, a lot would depend on how the friendship was going. I know that some parents have judged my daughter and some of her friends because they tend to wear dark clothing. All I can say to that is that 1) my daughter looks good in it, and 2) I much prefer it to the very sexual clothing that a lot of them wear.

Her friends have mostly been good kids with good values, but if she started getting into things like drinking because of friends, I'd have to find a way to address it.

Have you ever had problems with your kids' friends?

Mostly, my kids are each others' friends. Most of their friends - like most of mine - live at a distance.

However, a few years ago, we lived in a trailer park where there were quite a few children. One of them spent a lot of time with ours, including riding with us to church. We limited their exposure to this child, however, when we overheard him explaining to them what the term "69" means. They were not allowed to be alone with him or around him without a parent at all after that.

My sons are seven and five and there is one friend of my oldests son that I am not to crazy about. He will come over from time to time and play but I don't mind that because I am home and I can monitor what he is doing. It's not that he is a really bad kid it is just that he has a mouth on him. But I would definently try to do something to prevent my boys from hanging around the wrong crowd. Right now though I am basically everywhere they are.

My daughter was friends with a girl who lives down the road, a girl I really felt uncomfortable about. I felt sorry for her because she came from a confused and crazy kind of environment but at the same time was very tough, knowledgeable, jaded and disrespectful for her age. I was very lucky in that I can talk to my daughter about these concerns and actually when I did found out that she (my daughter) felt kind of bullied by this other girl. She was afraid of her and couldn't figure out how to end the friendship. We talked it through and eventually she managed to extricate herself from the friendship but if I had never talked to her I'm not sure what would have happened. Gotta keep talking and being honest with them!

No not really. My daughter and her friends also wear alot of dark clothing, I think it can make them look really bad and alot of people tend to judge them on their looks, but they seem to be really lovely kids, a bit odd some of them, but what's the fun in been normal, as she always says to me.
