It is a terrible lesson to have to learn, I am sure. I hope the child in question is able to recover from this and move forward. If the emotional status is not okay, maybe some counseling is in order.

Yes life does go on. My oldest mad me a gammie this past year and my youngest is 18. Time does fly when you are having fun.
