Maybe not a big scary place, but more like make-believe world.
Been through a phase myself in my younger days of keeping a very bizarre blog -- posting stupid things just for shock value of it and having a laugh. But then people started recognising me and my friends in the street -- wasn't exactly funny anymore.

Have a look at koalasafe. I believe it helps you both limit what your kids can do online and reports back on what they have accessed

I think you do need to monitor her but let her know that you will be doing it and that is the only way she will be getting a computer of her own. There are to many things out there that they can get pulled into and also as someone else said things that they can post that could get them into trouble with you or the law.
