Chronic insomnia occurs when a person has difficulty sleeping at least three nights a week for more than three months or frequently over a long period of time. Chronic insomnia condition affects an estimated 10% of the population.

Chronic insomniacs are often concerned about their sleep apnea and the accompanying daytime symptoms. When a person's work or school performance and social or family life are affected by symptoms, it's generally considered a sign of a serious mental illness.

There are many similarities between short-term and long-term insomnia disorders, although the symptoms and challenges encountered by those with short-term insomnia are less severe than those experienced by those with chronic insomnia disease. About 15 to 20 percent of adults report having short-term insomnia at some point throughout the course of the year.
