Middle School & After School Care...

I have a daughter who is going to 5th grade next year. I am trying to prepare myself and her for after school hours when she goes to middle school while I will be working full time. I know a lot of parents feel ok to let their child come home and stay there alone till they get home but I am not one of them. Unfortunately I raised a very dependent child which I am working on it to be fixed. But my question is about the after school care options. Do we have the option of having after school programs or activities for middle school age with out the need of us as parents to drive them or asking some one else to drive them?
I am aware of solutions such as : staying home, asking a friend to help out and so on. My question is specifically about an after school program.

Here it is a little different because primary school is up to the end of grade 6, so my 11yr old goes to "after school care" with my 5yr old, as they are at the same school. It's on the school grounds in a little portable at the back, and they go in, they have afternoon tea, then they play with their friends until someone picks them up.

In my experience, afterschool care is different for many. Some schools don't even offer it or only offer until like 5:00pm. Do you have a boy's and girl's club in your area? I used to have my son go there after school, They would have buses specifically for there to pick up from school. and I would pick him up when I got off of work at 5. He loved it.. he got to spend extra time with his friends and they even have volunteers to help with homework if you need them to. (like if you work later) It wasn' treally that costly either.

I am now a sahm with 5 SC and my son and we looked into the afterschool program here, just for the kids to have something to do after school as we live in the country now, they only do it until 4pm, 4 days a week and it's almost $200. a child! So my best advice is to look into the resources in your area and find what you think would work best for you and your child.

Does middle school start in 5th grade in your area? I am in the U.S. and middle school is typically 7-8 grade. Sometimes it is 6-8 or 7-9, but I thought 5th grade was always considered elementary school. It might help if you give your location.

Where I live, most people use the Boys & Girls Club. They ride the bus there. In some places, they even have buses to take kids home from the Boys & Girls Club. Another option is to have the bus drop her off at a daycare center that offers after-school care. I know a few families who drop their kids off at daycare centers for before-school care, and the bus picks them up from there in the mornings. As long as the daycare center or B&G Club is in the same community as your child's school, you should be able to have a bus drop her off there. It is pretty common. Most parents do work longer than their children attend school. Depending on when you get off work, you might also be able to enroll her in an after-school sport to fill in the gap.

I live in Atlanta- The middle school starts from 6th grade but I am trying to find out what exactly I need to prepare my daughter for and do it gradually in the next year so both of us get used to it.
The G&B club is not an option. we have girl's scout but they meet one day a week and we hated when joined last year. All we did was selling cookie and paying fees. about 500.00/year ( no one had paid this much for their girl scout)
We use public school- they don't drop your child anywhere but the pre-assigned stops they have.
None of our child care centers go to middle school to pick up as they stop accepting older kids.

what about a nanny, at least for a while? plenty of college students looking for this type of work, and your child isn't a baby no more, maybe shouldn't be that difficult?
