Pre-Natal vitamins...

When my ex and I conceived Delaney, she REFUSED to take pre-natal vitamins. I had a serious problem with this, and we had many arguments about it. Delaney is now a child who gets sick often: infections, colds, etc. It seems she's got something wong with her at least once a month. I can't help but sit back and wonder if her mother had taken vitamins when she was pregnant if Delaney's immune system would be better right now.

How effective are pre-natal vitamins?

I faithfully took my prenatal vitamins and my kids still got sick often as toddlers and preschoolers. I think it's all part of growing up and building the immune system.

they made me so sick I couldn't take them very long with either child. I made sure I ate right and took a multi vitamin once a day. My kids don't get sick very often

You at least took a multi-vitamin. She wouldn't take anything. The doctor told her she could even take two children's Flinstone's vitamins, as long as she was taking something. She refused.

It also is important to make sure you are getting enough folic acid each day (at least 0.4 mg). If taken during the first 3 months of pregnancy, folic acid helps prevent certain birth defects of the spine and skull (<I>neural tube defects</I>). In some cases, even if you are taking a prenatal vitamin, you may need to take a folic acid supplement.</SIZE>[/FONT]

It's my completely WA guess that the frequent infections are unrelated to her not taking vitamins. The average school-aged kid gets 7-8 upper respiratory infections each year, and that means, of course, that half of the kids get more infections and half get less. She may very well be utterly normal and just have the bad luck of catching a lot illnesses.

Have you brought your concerns to your ped? Maybe the ped can look into it more and give you an answer (versus an internet WAG).</SIZE>

I've never had the discussion with the Ped because my ex and I go to Delaney's ped appointments togther, and I don't want to start a fight. She knows how I feel about it to this day, so we just don't discuss it.

As far as her diet, I really don't recall. I would say she had an average diet. It wasn't like she sat around and ate nothing but candy bars.

I also did not take prenatals. They made me sooo sick. that it just wasn't worth my time. I also ate fairly healthy though.

Kids get sick, there is no point in doing the what ifs. THey will eat you alive. Breastfeeding is HUGE in the health of a child, however even they get sick and some may even get sick more often then a formula baby. There is no guerentee. All you can do is do you best.

Forgot to mention in my other post... Your DD's frequent illnesses may not be related to your ex's refusal to take vitamins at all. Both my kids were sick often with colds, ear infections, croup, pneumonia, etc.. Turned out to be allergy and asthma related, which is usually genetic. Once we pinpointed their allergens and got the asthma under control they have been MUCH healthier.

That said, once kids enter school they are exposed to a lot of germs. Yes, it really stinks when they get sick, but they can't live in a bubble. Being exposed to germs and fighting them off is nature's way of building up the immune system.

she may out grow it as she gets older but if you are really concerned ask her ped what he/she thinks the next time you are in for a check up. You don't have to mention your concern about the lack of pre natal vits if you don't want but you may want to discuss your feelings about her weaker immune system

Personally I took all my prenatal vits and also made sure to eat a lot of foods that contain folic acid.

Dd has been pretty darn health.. well up until she started preschool last Novermber... ugh.

Preschool = little walking petri dishes.

What is your wife reason for refusing to take them?

I did not take my prenatals either. I was constantly vommiting getting hospitalized and even in the hospital they didnt give them to me. I spent alot of time in the hospital.
I was always under the impression that the pre-natals were to keep woman from craving soap. Hmm

My daughter never really ever gets sick. though she does have some other problems but I chalk it up to the nemises and the bad birthing expierence.

I ritually took them and my son doesn't get sick often. But I think it doesn't have to do with that. Pre-natals are helping your body and the additional body that's inside of you because you have 'more body' to take care of.

Do you/did you have pets? My niece and nephew get sick ALL OF THE TIME and I think it has a lot to do with having pets.

When you're trying to decide which prenatal vitamin is right for you, talk to your doctor or midwife about their recommendations and keep some things in mind:

* No prenatal vitamin will contain all of the calcium you need.
* Too much vitamin A can cause birth defects, be sure that you're using a prenatal vitamin or a multi-vitamin with under 10,000 IU.
* Too much iron in a prenatal vitamin will not be absorbed properly.
* The taste and texture of vitamins do bother some women. If you can't keep your prenatal down, consider switching brands.
