Insomnia is a symptom, not an illness. It is being concerned with how much you sleep or how well you sleep. This may be caused by difficulties in either falling or staying asleep. Self-reported sleeping issues, unhappiness with sleep quality and daytime weariness are the only defining criteria of insomnia. It is an individual perception of sleep. Long-term chronic insomnia needs specialist support from a sleep disorder clinic.

The definition of ‘a good sleep’ changes greatly from person to person. While the average night’s sleep for an adult is around eight hours, some people only need five, while others like up to 10 hours or more. What appears like insomnia to one person could be deemed a decent sleep by another.

Insomnia affects more than a third of the population, yet only about five percent of those who encounter it regularly require medical attention. Short-term or transient insomnia can be brought on by a variety of factors, including stressful life events, jet lag, time zone differences, medical conditions, and stimulant drugs. When the acute event is finished, sleep patterns revert to normal levels.
