My girls have both guy and girl friends that are 2-3 years older or younger. I personally wouldn't think too much into it. Just try and keep their hanging out to group activities where it's not just them.

I guess it really depends on what is provoking the reprimanding. I know with my daughters (now 16), the back talk and attitude started around 11/12. If you don't get a good handle on it up front it can get really out of hand. Sometimes it seems like all I do is ride my girls too, but it's not...
