Bullying...

I came across this amazing video by Shane Koyczan called "To This Day", about bullying. It's also being shown in many schools now by teachers working against bullying.

Probably the most intense and profound poem (and images) I have ever seen - so I wanted to share it with all of you and, perhaps, you will want to share it with your teens or children when you talk to them about bullying.

I have seen it three time so far, and I cried each time.
Powerful, for those of us who lived it.

If you have suffered bullying, or if your kids did, this video may change your lives.

Memorable quotes:
"Sometimes becoming drug free has less to do with addiction and more to do with sanity."

"so broken heart strings bled the blues
as we tried to empty ourselves
so we would feel nothing"

"So we convinced ourselves that no one would ever love us and we would be lonely forever"

"If you can't see anything beautiful about yourself, get a better mirror, look a little closer stare a little longer."

Lyrics here... Enjoy.

I can't watch it right now cause my internet is being hogged by a download, but I'll come back to it.

Nice seeing you around PT.

Hey m2m, let me know what you think of it when you have the chance to see it.

Haven't been around too much lately as my Masters is arriving in a critical moment now (I just finished submitting to the ethics committee for my action-research project, that was a huge chunk!) but I am never too far :D

Cheers!

to this day
despite a loving husband
she doesn’t think she’s beautiful
because of a birthmark
that takes up a little less than half of her face
kids used to say she looks like a wrong answer
that someone tried to erase
but couldn’t quite get the job done
and they’ll never understand
that she’s raising two kids
whose definition of beauty
begins with the word mom
because they see her heart
before they see her skin
that she’s only ever always been amazing
Fourth listening, still crying
What a profound video...

<r><QUOTE><s>
</s>surrounded by people who used to say
that rhyme about sticks and stones
as if broken bones
hurt more than the names we got called
and we got called them all
so we grew up believing no one
would ever fall in love with us
that we’d be lonely forever
that we’d never meet someone
to make us feel like the sun
was something they built for us
in their tool shed
so broken heart strings bled the blues
as we tried to empty ourselves
so we would feel nothing
<s></s>don’t tell me that hurts less than a broken bone<e></e><e>

I think I'll be better able to post a coherent reply once I've gathered by thoughts...

I'll say this - I was never badly bullied in school - a few isolated incidents but nothing really horrible. Most of you know I was abused at home. I have come to realize that there really is no difference. It's the same thing, only one is perpetrated by adults and the other by kids...</r>

Yes.. I have thought of you also when I saw it. It's not that different...
I hope the poem helped, my friend.

I just finished, and it beautiful. Aiden said it was 'sad', Kailyn said to change it...she's 3 :)

I shared it on my FB, I have a few friends who could benefit from watching it.

wow!!! my kids watched it and they were shocked. The bit about being adopted really hit home (I'm adopted)

Sam had to stop watching at about 3:25.

Thanks for sharing Parentastic :) I just tweeted and fbd it

Yes, it's true that it is sad... but also incredibly positive and deep. :)

Thanks for watching it! Yeah, I can see how the part about adoption might have hit home for you if you were adopted. For me it was the part about not being picked for sport teams, and of course the cast and the mirror...
damn this whole thing hits home.

Why did Sam had to stop at 3:25?

He wouldn't talk about it, so we will see if he will talk about it or not but i think it was something to do with that part of the film.
