In 2004, the EPA banned arsenic based chemicals for pressure treated wood. This should have been done 20 years earlier, when research determined that exposure to arsenic causes multiple type of cancer. There are already very strict guidelines for arsenic in drinking water. The amount of arsenic that can leach out of pressure treated wood can sometimes be 1000x greater than the drinking water limit! Children are the most susceptible because of wooden playgrounds and hand-to-mouth behavior. There are test kits now available to test your pressure treated wood for arsenic content. Visit Arsenic Wood Home Test Kits for test kits.
