It broke my heart seeing the aftermath of hurricane katrina - all those babies who needed food.. while i made so much extra that I had to buy liners that had diaper-like abssorbant in them just to keep my shirt dry. and even then, one only lasted an hour or two. All of that going to waste while so many little ones were so hungry...
If I knew of a way to get my milk to those babies, I would have done it.

you don't have to go there. Typically, they send you the packaging once you are approved to donate, then you pump seal it, and send it to them.
Donated milk is processed so it does lose some of its greatness, but it is still better then formula.
Also many woman donate through mother share, which is a site for mothers that are looking for milk for their babies. They typically want your doctor to pass you and then you have to have your milk tested (they pay for it most of the time) then you mail them the milk
