I'm getting worried about my 6 mo old boy making these dry hacking sounds lately. It's not quite a cough, but he's been doing it a lot more than I care for. So far it seems like everytime he does it, he's been really thirsty, and giving him water helps, or he would do it when he's spitting up, but I don't know if that's all it is. Could he be getting dust and hairs in his throat? We have a cat, and the place can get pretty dusty. Has anybody's baby had the whooping cough, because he's only had one shot for it, and now I'm starting to get worried!

My daughter used to do the same and we had a cat and a dog. But my daughter would do that even when we weren't home. It could be dry mouth or a sensitive gag reflex. My daughter is 13 and still hacks and gags easily.

Consider one of the bronchospastic diseases such as asthma, presenting as cough rather than wheeze. If so, allergy is one of many causes.
