My DS is on his third ear inection. It seems like he's just rolling from one to the next. Dad had tubes in his ears twice. Does anyone have any suggestions? I avoid getting water in his ears.

Some kids are more prone to ear infections than others. If your son is getting them close together, it could be that the initial infection never totally cleared up. In that case, a stronger antibiotic is necessary.

My DS had his first ear infection at 3. Then he tended to get them often, along with what our ped. thought was croup at the time. Turned out to be allergy induced asthma. Once we got his allergies and asthma under control, he has not had one ear infection since.

I'm not saying that's what's going on with your son, but keep it in mind if he continues to get them a lot. Allergies and ear infections can be related.

Some kids are just more prone to ear infections than others. I don't think it's due to water in the ears. My doctor told me that babies get ear infections because they can't get sinus infections since their sinuses aren't fully developed. Ear infections usually happen during teething and/or after a cold.

We are actually going through this right now. My 16 month old daughter has had several ear infections in the past couple months. The pediatrician is going to refer us to a specialist for allergy's and such. She is waiting until after her hip surgery before we go ahead with the allergy specialist though.

I dont know how much faith I'd put into the whole allergy asthma thing. We live in Az it's super hot and dry and dusty. That alone will cause your mucus membranes to be overactive. My DD had alergy testing done and the only things she reacted to were Olive and Mulberry trees. I just feel doctors are too quick to slap asthma on kids. DD can run and jump and climb nonstop with no wheezing or coughing how can a kid be like that AND have asthma. Maybe I dont understand but from my own research the specturm of asthma has gotten way to broad. Bubba is teething and I know that has alot to do with his ears. Between the teething and genetics we're in for it. I looked around alittle about the garlic drops and that seems to be a preventive action. I'm gonna talk to my chiropractor about that and the Graves disease. He does nutritional counsueling also. I'm open to suggestion to avoid putting any more chemicals into my son and I.

Well, on our case, my DS wasn't diagnosed with asthma until he had an episode so bad, he almost died and was in the hospital for 4 days. We went to an allergist and learned he had developed a cat allergy. We had always had 3 cats, but had recently acquired 2 more. His cat allergy is manageable, but apparently 5 cats were too much. Now we're down to 2 cats, and he's off asthma meds and doing great.

DD has asthma also. However, I knew the symptoms and didn't wait until things got as bad as they did with DS. Every spring and summer she would have croupy coughing. She went through allergy testing, and we learned she's allergic to tree pollen, which is out in the spring and summer, when her asthma flared. Now on allergy and asthma meds and doing fine.

So YES, judging by our experiences, I'm confident the allergy asthma thing is real.

My 2 1/2 year old has asthma. She can run and jump and climb nonstop with no wheezing or coughing unless she is sick or has been sick. I read in another thread a while back that someone said they thought doc's "labeled" kids with asthma too much also. I talked to my cousin, who is about to graduated and be a nurse practioner and just finished her pediatric rotation, I asked her what she thought about it. She said she thinks it is real and that it is alot easier to diagnose now. She did go into more detail but that was the just of it. I think there are several different types of asthma. My oldest had coughing asthma (which only flared up when her allergy's did). She would cough until she would throw up. Now let me tell you, that was REAL.

I didnt mean to make anyone defensive with my real comment. As for the coughing untill you throw up thing. Ya DD has done that also. To us it seems more like an attention getter then actually coughing untill you throw up. If shes coughing and we say get a drink she stops coughing. If we offer to give her Robatusin cough syrup she stops coughing. So in our case I think there is alot of acting going on and I put no faith in the asthma/allergy diagnosis. Her mom totally believes it and has had DD on allergy and steroid medication on and off for the last two years. This is how DD is with hr mom. If I'm 4yo and I want my mom to pay attention to me all I have to do is act sick and she'll drop everything to make sure I'm comforted. Thats about how it is with us.

My kids do not do it for attention. My oldest HATES taking medicine, even when she was younger. It's funny how your own experiences with things makes you think things that are totally real for other people not seem so real to you (its adhd/add for me). I just want you to know that it allergy/asthma thing is real in some cases and the doctor's are not just blowing it up into it.

I have heard twice now that a milk allergy can show up as sinus problems. My chiropracter recommended stopping milk and replaceing it with soy or almond milk to see if the ear problems improve.

yes milk allergies can show up as sinus issues, it's actually not an allergy though in an intolerance. Milk allergies are very very very rare, hives and anaphylactic shock are true signs of allergy. Sinus, diarrhea and the such are allergies. Those are very very very common. I can't remember off hand, but like 75% of all people have milk allergies. For the simple reason that humans are not meant to drink baby animal milk. Of course I love my milk! lol

Soy can be dangerous for young kids because it is natural estrogen. I prefer almond, but rice milk is ok. Nichole didn't like the rice milk so...

I'm trying the rice milk the last two days. I want to try the almond milk though I dont think Bubba it too crazy about the rice milk. I just have to make a special trip to Sprouts or Trader Joes. Two places I dont routinely shop. Thanks Kaytee.
