Is this the right place for parenting book threads? I've been reading and writing about this book and am curious to know what others might think of it.

Its subtitle is "A Map for the Masculine Journey," and it's about developmental stages that are unique to boys. Eldredge has a two-pronged thesis: (1) Boys must pass through these stages successfully in order to be whole men and (2) Most men did not pass through them as boys, so are incomplete men.

I really like his ideas in thesis number 1. Number 2 bugs me because he paints with very broad brushes.

Kind of like Maslowe's hierarchy of needs, Eldredge ties each stage to a specific need. The stages (and needs) are boyhood (wonder and exploration), cowboy (adventure and testing), warrior (confront evil), lover (learn the life of the heart), king (learn to rule a kingdom), sage (teach and initiate others).

The book is intensely Christian. Really, it's a third thesis: since men are unwhole, they need to be initiated into manhood by God.

Anyone read it?
