Kindergarten....

Rebekah's first day of kindergarten was today.

I have to say, I think her teacher is a damn fruit loop. I signed up for the parent help and I was rostered on the first day, which was today, so very second monday i'll be helping out (cuttng up the fruit salad for afternoon tea, cleaning, etc)

The teacher is just so unbelieveably overprotective of them, they have blocks but theyre not allowed to stack them more than two blocks high, incase it falls on someone, well, whats the point of having blocks if you cant build with them? They have monkeybars but theyre off limits, because theyre dangerous. They are the height of a 4yr old, the kindergarten is not shared with a pre-school or school or anything, its a stand alone place, it was BUILT for 4yr olds.

One of the kids tripped over their shoelace, he had a little red mark on his knee, she made him sit with ice for a whole entire hour, when they played musical statues he was not allowed to stand up, he had to play sitting on the chair with the ice on his knee, this was half an hour after he fell, on carpet, inside.

She inpects their lunch boxes, we have to provide them with morning tea and lunch, aswell as a piece of fruit to 'donate' towards the fruit salad for afternoon tea.
SHE INSPECTS THEM. She has ruled up a chart and notes what theyre eating, I asked her if this was a government requirement or something, she said "No, I just like to look after the children and make sure theyre being fed well"
Thats not her place to do that. Rebekah offically has a red mark on her line because I am such a horrible mother and I gave her a jelly (or jello, whatever you call it) cup to go with her lunch. No, nevermind that she had a nice healthy turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato and grated carrot sandwich on dark rye bread, and I gave her a tub of yoghurt for morning tea, and that she ate two bowls full of fruit salad in the afternoon, that damned jelly cup made the big red marker come out.

Ugh, would it be detrimental to Bek if I moved her to another kindergarten? She's only been there for one day and I really want to throttle that lady.

IMHO Its better to have the first teacher more strict than you think she should be than the other way around. If she were to be in a class where the teacher was more lenient. Then the next teacher may need to do some adjusting. This way next year should be "a walk in the park".

The other thing I would mention is maybe the teacher has had something happen in her past that warrents her being overprotective. Maybe someone got hurt really bad. Or was not properly cared for and she didnt catch it. Then again maybe she is just a nut job. It sounds like even if her head isnt, her heart is in the right place. And maybe its a first day show to calm the parents. All I am saying is check her out a little more. Ask around about her. Just IMHO

Sounds like a fruit loop to me. My MIL is like that. When my kids are with her they can't do anything because everything is dangerous. All that does is teaches kids to fear everything. Her hearts in the right place sure but she needs to loosen up.

This country has litigation on the brain, particularly where children are concerned. I can almost see someone with that in mind being so neurotic.

But I don't think I could handle this. She's the person you're entrusting your child to; if you're convinced she's a complete wacko nutjob, are you ever going to be comfortable with her care of your kid?

If its that easy, I'd switch right now before it's too late. That's annoying and I'd be pissed if someone put a red mark on a chart cause I gave my kid jello. Haha I'd probably send her in with a cream filled hostess cupcake, a box of chocolate chip cookies, a cheeseburger and some caramel popcorn the next day of school just to rile her up. LOL I'm immature. :D Its none of her business what's in those kids' lunch boxes. I mean literally, she shouldn't be opening them at all. It's ridiculous. I'd say the only thing that's her business is the fruit going into the salad cause everyone is eating that so you have to be careful I guess.

All that stuff you said was so annoying. I'd move her, but that's just me. I guess it depends on how much that kind of thing would bother you. What a weirdo.

is she counting the red mark in the child's conduct or something? or using it to judge how well you take care of baby girl? if that's the case, i'd get baby girl into a new class and bring this teacher's behavior in front of the school board.

but if she's keeping an eye out for the kids getting snacks b/c some of the parents just can't afford it, then i wouldn't worry. emmy's teacher keeps an eye on the kids and makes sure everyone has a snack. but she doens't judge what they bring or nothing. if she did that a lot of kids would be in the red & the parents would be having a hissy fit. i've seen kids bring nothing but candy and then kids who bring a mix, and some who only bring healthy stuff..

anyways, all schools know there will be accidents.---> kids tripping, getting a bump on the noggin, knocking things over. but that teacher sounds like a real busy body.

She's all good to me save for the food chart.

So far as the ice on the knee... better over cautious than under.

Regarding the blocks... She's the captain of her ship. Captains have quirks.

The monkey bars... Were other classes in Kindergarten allowed on them?

Give her a week. If you are going to be there to keep an eye on things, so much the better. We had worries that Kai's 1st Grade teacher was overly strict but, she turned out pretty doggone good when all was said and done.

Im mainly concearned because Bek is very easily influenced, and the last thing I want is her getting all paranoid because of this teacher.

I spoke to the teacher on friday about my concearns, she pretty much told me a big long story about how she's been a kindergarten teacher for 3 years now so she knows all about the children and the parents need to know their place and realise that there is alot that we can learn from her.

Im sorry, but Bek has been alive longer than this woman has been teaching, so I dont get her point.

Ive discided to pull her out and re-enrol her at a different kinder as of next term (its too late to enter into a different facility at this point in the term) ive looked into a different kinder in our area and the teacher seems alot more sane.

can you say "balistic"?
after a statement like "parents need to know their place." and the fact that she's only been teaching for three years, authorities would be escorting dh and me off the property.

Just a little update.

Bek started at her new kinder 3 weeks ago and the teacher there is lovely and Bek is loving it. So in the end it turned out all good.

I think that's awesome you moved your kid based on your gut.

I can't remember who it was, (Lisa I think?? lol) who left her kid with the babysitter even though she felt things were "wrong"...then bad things kept happening.

Just because someone is a teacher doesn't make them an expert or great at their job...just like any other profession. Sounds like you made the right choice!

I think this is partly this woman and partly the fact that we are now a "bubble wrap" society. The odd "boo boo" on the knee that was a badge of honor when we were kids is now for some parents a reason to sue. So teachers feel little choice but to behave in a paranoid way. But even with this in mind this teacher sounds pretty off the charts. Hopefully this new place is a bit calmer.

As a former Kindergarten teacher myself, I have to agree this woman is a fruit loop! Glad to hear you moved your DD and she's thriving in her new school!

Fruit loop, for sure! And some of what she is doing is not only harmful, but illegal. Making a child sit for a hour with ice on the knee? Teachers are not supposed to make a five year old sit for more than five minutes when in time-out!

I'm so glad you moved your child, but I'd worry about the other kindergartners in her class. Perhaps if enough parents went to the principle, she could be fired, or or at least, her strict policies could be addressed and changed.
