i'm my mothers daughter and a mother of two now and i started wearing thongs at 15 :)), i don't remember my mother saying I'm ugly or anything like that ever. She was wondering from time to time if i'm comfortable enough or if they are healthy for me to wear those, but never about me being ugly. I have a daughter too. I will NEVER say to my daughter that she is trashy and ugly. I believe that saying negative words and reactions towards your kids will lead to negative reactions from their side too. Now reading this, i respect MY mother even more.

I mentioned to her that she isn't thin and things only look good on thin people.. I did it for her own good. I don't like he wearing thongs and I never wore them and only slutty girls do and I don't want me daughter to be one of them.. I don't understand why she wants to wear them so badly... and there are plenty of other more appropriate alternatives other than granny panties.. I'm against it and she should respect my wishes.
Yes and you didn't have an Ipod when you were her age either i bet. Listen... wearing a thong doesn't make a girl a slut any more than wearing a pinstripe suit makes me a gangster.

I would worry less about the underwear and more about her self-image. just a shot in the dark here but i have a feeling that you remind her a lot that she is overweight. Maybe this is her way of privately feeling more sexy and attractive.

There's nothing wrong with thongs. Besides like someone else said above, they don't make lines under tighter pants. My daughter wears them and I'm fine with that. I used to wear them as well. No need to be so uptight about this subject, IMO

Thongs are an impractical form of underwear at best, and are purely about sexualization IMO. If not for the fact that it's just a string of cloth running between your butt cheeks, then for the fact that "it reduces panty lines". Well, why wear pants so tight on your butt that they squeeze around your underwear in the first place?

So let me get this straight, you should wear a piece of string in your butt so you can wear pants that are too small for you, so that young men can gawk at your behind?

well given that perspective perhaps we should discuss the need for underwear at all....

As for alleviating panty lines, isn't that a common affliction? I hear ads for panties that claim not to leave any, I hear my wife complain about them and I don't think there's anything particularly provocative about that....

You're absolutely right IADad.

@umb24: If you want to boil everything down at to a matter of practicality then yes why bother wearing any at all... its cheaper, less laundry, easier on the environment, less time to get dressed... now that's practical right?

Is it practical to have your handbag match your shoes? or your earrings match your necklace? In fact why bother wearing jewelry at all??

Fashion is fashion... its is what we have made it out to be. Its a means of self expression for the most part.

Otherwise we would all be walking around in the same clothes with the same bulky underwear!

Oh my goodness people, really?!

Underwear serves a <I>practical purpose.</I> You wear it to keep your outer clothing from getting soiled in your own bodily fluids, and to keep those areas unexposed from the external, possibly harmful elements, and to provide support for your outer clothing. Thongs do a poor, poor job of these things and are <I>not </I>designed with them in mind.

What does that have to do with matching clothes or accessories. No those are not necessary, but underwear is. And underwear should not seem "bulky" unless you're wearing clothes that are too small for you!

I was taking some liberties to make to a point about your statement about practicality. Nothing to get your underwear in a twist about.

1. Thongs was original meant to be a type of bathing suit, like "Super high-legs".

2. Women wear thongs because they are comfortable to wear like men wear boxers or briefs. Men briefs are the same as bras and supports and help delay gravity.

3. She is fricken engaged. Game over. She is not five years old, and she is not
even 11. The guy has seen her naked, at some point, and to him, he could careless.

4. If their was a medical reason to switch to panties, briefs, or other lesser-garmets then you need to provide a medical reason. Scare her bad into panties.

5. About sluts. Sluts are only a ficitonal thing. Most "bad-girls" are never really bad to being with. Like when I was in highschool their was a girl who was the "self-proclaimed bitch" but nobody knew her name or cared about her, but me. Years later she is an accountant ( gold digger ) and has boyfreind who .....has lots of gold.

Another woman I knew wented on to become a playboy model. That is what she is doing now.

Another one was a model, and she had high grades in highschool, and was not super skinny.......

They are only acting. All women are sluts at one point in their lives. Just like all men are pigs who search the earth, search the sea, and search the sky for these sluts.

Your daughter could walk around in a string bekini and people would be staring because it is a string bikini.

Its not fair to be called slut for your underwear. I do not wear underwear some days and that is not slut either. It doesnt matter what you wear or dont wear. I was pretty sure you are only ok to be called slut if you sleep with lots of men easily. If you only like being in ur boyfriends bed and no other man its not 'slut'.

I would be more concerned with my 17 ya daughter getting married than I would her bloomers. If she is mature enough to make that kind of decision, certainly she can decide if she like granny panties or a string in her rear end. And your telling her that she is to chubby or a slut for it tells me exactly why she doesn't value your old fashioned opinion. Its offensive. I am chubby.. and not a slut and own my own thongs... and make them look good! :jiggy:

I agree with others who said that if this is your biggest issue with a 17 year old, good for the both of you. Seems to me, the bigger issue is that she is engaged already. I personally find thongs uncomfortable. But really, even if they are ugly, who is going to see them? Does she walk around in them, cause if she does, that is also a bigger issue than her wearing them at all. This is an example of choose your battles, and IMO, this should not be one of them.

I think the biggest issue here is your system of beliefs around the thong underwear...not the thong underwear themselves.

From the sound of it your Belief = Thong = Something (slutty, for skinny girls, etc.)

You may want to consider why you believe that?

In addition, you may want to consider what you are communicating to your daughter?

Last, you may want to question you "control" factor. Are there other areas of your daughters life that you feel that you need to control.

I'd also caution others to say that this issue is trivial. It's obviously not, otherwise SusyLoren wouldn't be having such a big issue.

You know, when I was a teenager, my Mom accused me of being sexually involved with my girlfriend because we held hands together in front of her.

Talk about a faulty belief system.

I hope you find your answers.

DoT.
