There is a new web and mobile service called My Social Sitter that recently launched which can help protect kids from irresponsible communication, threats, cyber-bullying, and the like while promoting a learning tool about positive digital communication through their social media accounts.

Manually monitoring the social media accounts of your children at all hours is not a realistic endeavor. My Social Sitter creates peace of mind, monitors 24/7 and instantly stops a potentially negative and harmful message from going out based on a database of thousands of red-flag words and acronyms, along with any custom words/acronyms you'd like to enter.

The user is notified in seconds if the message was posted or rejected. Rejected messages can be edited to re-transmit. If the rejected message was harmful (depression or suicide sentiments) parents are instantly sent a text message. Parents can log into a dashboard to see detailed information about all communication and tendencies.

This system educates and encourages positive digital communication. For every positive post, the user receives a token to redeem for gift cards.

It sounds like a good idea. However, I know there are things my daughter has posted that I catch. Her facebook feeds go on my feeds and her Google Plus account is attached to my email and I get EVERYTHING she posts and what her friends post. Actually, she doesn't have her own email.

The only thing is if kids are in distress and really going through stuff, they will be acting on it and not talking about it on social media. Or at least not on the sites they know mom and dad are monitoring.

Manual monitoring is always an excellent idea, of course. You are definitely correct. On the other hand, 24/7 monitoring cannot be realistically done without help. That's where My Social Sitter steps in. Think of it as another layer of protection; not an end-all solution.

Our app will not allow communication to be posted if the content raises red flags. That cannot be effectively done without an app such as My Social Sitter.

As far as social media being used as a way to express harmful acts, it's very prevalent:

"Thomas T.J. Lane, the school shooter in Ohio in 2012, ranted on Facebook only two months prior to shooting his classmates at high school. Using My Social Sitter, lives could’ve been saved."

Even with a great amount of vigilance, it’s not possible for you to watch your child or teen 24 hours a day. It's terrible that so many suicides have occurred due to cyber-bullying. Rebecca Sedwick, Tyler Clementi and Adrian Alvaresz (who sadly posted suspicious content on Facebook before he committed suicide), all took their lives due to cyber-bullying.

"One million children were harassed, threatened or subjected to other forms of cyber-bullying on Facebook during the past year, while 90% of social media-using teens who have witnessed online cruelty say they have ignored mean behavior on social media, and 35% have done this frequently. 95% of social media-using teens who have witnessed cruel behavior on social networking sites say they have seen others ignoring the mean behavior, and 55% witness this frequently.

The National Crime Prevention Council reported in 2011 that cyber-bullying is a problem that affects almost half of all American teens."

Also, the app isn't only geared towards kids. My Social Standard is the other version of the app that can be useful for social media blunders by adults, too. Fines, firings, rants, hacks, et cetera. It can be another layer of protection for those types of things. Check the following link for examples if you have time:

I really appreciate your input, artmom! It will only help us to make My Social Sitter better and more effective. :) And, awesome job being active with manually monitoring your daughter's communication. That is a step all parents should take.
