Myrilax?...

Every since Bailey has been born we have always used the Similac Isolmil Advanced Soy formula, she has always had ridiculously hard stool-now that we started solid foods it is even worse. So at her 9 mos. check up I asked the doctor what we could do to ease her bowel movements. He recommended using a half of a cap full of Myrilax-so I did, seems to be working great-no more hard stool. In the last week she has had several days where she vomits up probably 1/3 of her food throughout the day, still acts normal and plays well. Then for a few days she will be fine. We have also gradually been switching her over to regular Similac. Other than the occasional vomiting and gassiness, it seemed to be working.

Here is my question (finally), the main ingredient in Myrilax is Poly-ethelyne Glycol-aka Antifreeze. Should I even be using this stuff, even though it is doctor recommended. Kinda scary-and also do you think this could be causing the vomiting? I called the dr. office and they said she probably has the Rotovirus, which I guess is running rampant through our city, but seems more coincidental with just starting the Myrilax. Anyone else used this product and how did it work for you?

I gave mine juicy juice mixed with water. It always worked. Half and half so not to give her a tummy ache.
I wouldn't use anything else.

we were using apple juice but that seemed to have stopped working as well. I am glad that we are the not the only ones that think this is a bad idea. I was just hoping that maybe someone would have used it and would say that it would be ok.

I have never heard of it. But I would sugest trying new formulas over giving her that kinda stuff. If course I lean more towards natural stuff to begin with.

Miralax and antifreeze are not the same thing. Miralax is polyethylene glycol (PEG). Antifreeze in monoethylene glycol (MEG). It may not look like much, but there is a big difference. Antifreeze (MEG) is toxic and easily gets into your bloodstream if you drink it. Miralax is nontoxic and less than a half of a percent of Miralax (PEG) enters the blood stream. Polyethylene glycol is the same stuff people have to drink to clean out their colons before a colonoscopy - and in those situations the person is drinking a ton of it.

We used Miralax quite a bit for our daughter when she was younger. It worked wonderfully and didn't cause her any problems. She had the same problem with constipation when starting solids. Now that she's 18 months, she rarely has any problems and we haven't used it in months.

as far as solids go, she is on the typical ones, some meats, some veggies and some fruits all made by Gerber. We also give her oatmeal (the baby kind) for breakfast mixed with fruit, since that is the ONLY was she will eat fruit-she hates the stuff. She also gets up to two bottles a day with formula and 2-3 bottles (4-6oz) of either plain water or mixed with a little apple juice. Every once in a while if we are feeling brave enough we will give her the dreaded cookies-what a disaster, and she has several of the flavored puffs while we eat our dinner so she can do what we are doing. Constipation has unfortunatly been a problem her whole life, but I am not sure that this Myrilax is the solution.
