I teach young children, and it is interesting to hear some of their conversations about discipline at home. Many of them use the term "whoop" or "hit" to describe what their parents do. This makes me think that, even though adults see a difference between "spanking" and "hitting," children don't. When I hear them describe the discipline as "hitting," I ask more questions. If they get hit somewhere other than on the butt, that's a red flag. If there is any visible mark (no, I don't check their butts!) or if an object has been used such as a belt or ruler, I am required by law to report it as child abuse.
