What is the ground work a parent has to do before discussing career choices with the child?...

Hello,
I feel every parent should be prepared to hear and accept their child’s interests & choices. This doesn’t mean that you let your child do whatever they aspire to become. It’s just about having an open mind and the heart to accept and be supportive of your child’s aspirations and then guiding them towards the right career direction.
I recently watched a video on having a career talk with your child. It may help you too. Take a look at the video here.

Hope this helps. :)
All the best with the talk!
